Hi, I have previously mentioned i have bought a new snake that is 3 years old and not keen on being handled, i was advised to leave it 1 week before trying to handle her, it has now been 1 week and i was wondering what is the best technique for picking her up? i have only had lizzards before and you just picked them up around the waist, not sure if snakes are the same or if novices or owners with hostile snakes have different techniques.
It's a bit big to scoop up so what I do is take hold around the mid-point and lift out using the other fore-arm underneath as a support. Don't try to grip to resrain the snake, instead let it go up your arm, around your hand and let it explore. Give it 5 minutes or so then let it head back into the viv under its own steam. If it doesn't feel threatened it will gradually accept being brought out and become more relaxed.
BTW, for your own sake, make sure that it has had a chance to poop first. Nothing like a nervous snake or handler for getting 'things' going.
