Do i need to take the snake out of its viv 2 feed it or can i put the mouse in the viv? was reading a sticky on non feeding snakes and it says that if you have just bought the snake (as i have but with its orignal set up.) you should not feed it for a week or 2 to avoid handeling the snake, i didnt think i would need to pick the snake up 2 feed it unless i needed to remove the snake from the viv.

different people do it different ways. I always feed outside the viv. Mainly, so that they don't associate me opening the viv with feeding time (and possibly strike/bite) and 2 i use aspen, and i wouldn't want snakie to swallow any of that by mistake with the mouse.

However, alot of people feed in the viv without any of these problems! Just make sure that no bedding is swallowed, maybe put the mouse on a smooth surface inside the viv.

It's down to personal preference really!

leave him to settle in for a week before feeding also. it's better to feed outside the viv to avoid the snake accidentally swallowing substrate with it's mouse and you don't want your snake associate your hand coming into the viv as food

My only concern is the previous owner said she doesnt like being handeled much altho she did in the past but wasnt handled for a long time so has become anxious towards being handeled and im worried picking her up might be a stressfull event for the frist few weeks may be a month or 2 and i dont want this to effect her feeding.

If you have just got her, make sure you leave her for the first 7 days, no handling, only water changes. After this, handle for short periods every day (apart from 48hrs after feeding of course), say 5mins to start with, gradually brining the time up to 10, 15 mins etc. IF it does affect her feeding, i'd limit handling to when necessary until she has had a few succesful feeds :)

My hatchling was very flighty when i first got her, but after patience and short handling periods to begin with, she is now great to handle!

Re beech wood chip, still a risk of ingesting this when feeding.

Some people use feeding dishes to put the mouse on if they feed in a viv so that the snake is much less likely to swallow any substrate. There is a risk of it causing a blockage if it is swallowed which can be an expensive vet visit to fix (if it is possible to fix it). Personally I feed outside the viv but some people use feeding bowls, large flat surfaces or kitchen roll to avoid ingestion of substrate.

I feed both our babies in their homes, I put kitchen roll down and draw them out on to it. A couple of times they've dragged it over the aspen but had no ill effects.

To be honest I can't see why they would associate my hand in their viv with food when I'm more often changing water and getting them out than feeding them. Wouldn't they just think they were being fed every time you get them out if you do it that way?

I don't feed in the viv either. I bought a plastic storage box from the supermarket with small air holes in the side and feed the snakes in that. When finished I hold the box up to the viv entrance to let them go back in without being handled

Wood chip is a high risk of impaction should it be ingested as it doesn't break down very well, I personally wouldn't feed anywhere near wood chip with smaller snakes even on paper or plates as a lot of corns like to roll about with their food first. If your snake will only feed in the vivarium, I would switch to a safer substrate other than that, see how you get on feeding in a feeding tub, you can do this with minimal handling.

PS welcome to the forum, good luck with handling.

As above, I prefer feeding in the tub. I tried feeding Bazil ( when she was a hatchling ) of a sheet of kitchen towel over the substrate, but she always dragged the mouse backwards all across the faun first, making sure she got as much aspen on , as possible :-( .

So when I got Little T., I put him on a kitchen towel substrate for the first month or so - which is handy, as you can feed them in their own home, without having to handle them. Also, you can see immediately when they poop, whilst hatchling poo can be hard to find on Aspen. It's easy and cheap to change, too. Then, when he was used to handling a bit, and I knew his pooping habits and that everything was ok, I put him on aspen, but from then on, fed him in a separate tub.

As said it is up to you on wether you feed in the viv or not, just be sure to minimise substrate ingestion if you do feed in it. I do feed in the viv and out of the viv depending on the snake and what else I need to do at the time.

Just to clarify feeding in your viv will not make your snake associate you putting your hand in with food every time you put you hand in. If you apply the same logic to feeding outside the viv, then everytime you get them out for something then they would think it is feeding time. It is simply not the case in either situation.

I feed my boy outside the viv cause he won't eat inside it and my girl inside it because she won't eat outside it. The only way I get them to eat the opposite way round is by using freskly killed otherwise, they're not interested.

Personally I always feed in a seperate rub.
It means I can see what has been eaten and it eliminates the risk of ingested substrate.
I offer food ever time to all my snakes, blue or not. I've never had a blue snake refuse food yet.
The choice is yours to make after you've weighed up the pros and cons. There's no right or wrong.
You may find your snake decides for you!
Hope it all goes well....

Fed her in the tank on a feeding tray, she ate it no probs, altho she did take it out of the feeding tray which was on top of her hiding rock and ate the mouse in mid air, but it went down easily enough, think the smell of new tray was unnerving as she spent a few minute sniffing before she went for mouse then about 10/15 mins fully examining it.
