Hi guys.
After the warm welcome on the 'Intro' thread, I thought I'd raise a few queries.
We're considering committing to a corn following our temporary homing of a relatives snake during a house move. I appreciate the long term commitments etc and quite happy to delve in, but while I obviously want to go about this in the right way for the benefit of the animal, I'd rather avoid un-necessary costs.

I've been offered a VX36 viv and cabinet which is relatively new (won't bore with detail), however it seems there's mixed opinions on whether a young snake should be kept in a more size appropriate viv early on. In your opinions, could I make use of this now or cadge anyway and store for future use?
I also happen to have an ExoTerra glass viv, a small 30cm square based version. With a suitably sized heatmat etc., would this suffice for a hatchling/young corn or would this be going too extreme the other way and be too small?

It seems from what I've read that some (if not most) folk upgrade/upsize the viv as necessary, but would appreciate your advice.
Incidentally, the snake we homed for those few months (George), was about 2 1/2 ft and lived in an 24" viv, which I assume he'll eventually outgrow.

The VX range (36"x18.5") will house a fully grown corn no probs, but might freak out a younger corn (less than a year old).

However, I moved my baby corns into 36"x15" vivs at 8 months old, and provided plenty of hides and plants for them and didn't have any problems at all. But I still had their old fauns, so if there was a problem, they could be moved back.

So, if you can use the exo terra viv for them, and then try them in the VX36 when they're about 8-9 months old, then there shouldn't be any issues that you can't handle!

Good luck with the new snake! And pics when you get him!

The exo terra would be great for a hatchling corn snake and will last until the snake is 24" long The vx36 should do a full sized corn, although you might want to put a divider in until he's big enough to go into it as at 24" the snake could feel a bit lost in such a big viv. Good luck with your new snake when you get it, and don't forget about a thermostat as a lot of reptile/pet stores fail to mention it's a must have

Cheers guys, set my mind at rest at least (I think). Thanks too Hissyfit on idea of partioning the larger viv, I hadn't considered that option but it makes sence. As for the stat, ta for reminder but it was something I'd already factored in, nevertheless some dealers might overlook it as you say.
I'll keep you posted.
