Hi, I have a question about my female amel corn...
Today is her third consecutive week refusing to eat, she also refuses to let me handle her and now strikes for me every time I go near :(
(She shed just over a week ago, which I thought was the initial reason behind it but there's been no change in her behaviour)
I took her to the vet 2 weeks ago after she suffered 'constipation' and he said she is 2 - 2 and a half years (not the 3+ I was told when I bought her in August.
Ive never had any problems with handling and feeding times before but she is homed with my male snow so i'm thinking maybe pregnancy??? What do you think??

How big is your snake and what does she weigh? I find it quite impressive that the vet was able to give you an approximate age considering the fact that snakes have such different growth rates...
How long has she been in with your male? I know my female doesn't stop eating until she gets close to laying. |

Shes just over 3 foot, not sure on weight as cant for the life of me remember what the vet said and I cant get anywhere near her to weigh her.
I thought the same thing about the vet, but he asked how old she was and when I told him he said that he thought she was younger! My snow and carolina are both 18 month n she is significantly bigger length and width wise.
Shes been with the male since the last week in August. |

| Would the vet not have noticed if she was pregnant? Can you give us detailed information about your setup and feeding regime and post some pictures if you can to help us identify the problem. If you don't want her to have any babies then you had best seperate them straight away because if she is not pregnant now then she will be soon. |

Thanks Donnie, I did consider the same thing, (that the vet should have noticed, coz he did have a good ol' rummage around when clearing her out)
Its not that I dont want them to breed, I wouldnt mind, im just worried about her not eating and the huge change in her behaviour around me!
She is in a 3ft viv with a heatmat, lamp, 2 hides and a large water bowl, the temperature is usually around the 25-28 mark, she is def drinking as ive busted her twice this week with her head in the bowl!
She was eating 1 'small' every Sunday and had never missed a meal before the last 3 weeks.
What kind of pictures would you like, baring in mind I am unable to get anywhere near her.

Quite possibly this ^^^^ I would keep them separate and if you do want them to breed then just put them together to mate and then seperate them after. When she has calmed down a bit I would weigh and measure her as you ideally want her to be 3 years old, 300 grams and 3 ft long before you breed her. |

Im very sad to say but this snake died today :(
I followed everyone's advice and the 2 snakes have been separated since the initial thread was posted. I only got the snake at the end of August and have been keeping snakes for the last 2 years and never had any problems with them but this one has been to the vets twice! Once for mites and once for 'constipation' as the vet described it (she had hard white poo sticking out of her vent, he removed it and examined her internally only 3 weeks ago but said she was fine) She hasnt eaten since and hadnt eaten for a week previous. (total of 4 missed meals)
Anyway, I have just come home from work to find her limp with her mouth wide open and oddly full of aspen bedding :( I removed the aspen from her mouth but her mouth is still wide open...
When I left for work this morning she was in the middle of her tank which I thought was odd for the time of day but she was breathing so I didnt worry too much, I am really confused and incredibly upset :( What makes me feel worse is that when I took her to the vets 3 weeks ago he said she was fine hence me not being too worried.
I feel incredibly guilty and irrisponsible for not taking her back to the vets despite her not eating for a total of 4 weeks now. |

dont feel guilty over not taking to a vet for not eating for 4 weeks, really dont think anyone on the forum would. Missing only 4 meals is like not having a starter at dinner time.

wouldnt read too much into the aspen in the mouth, my best guess would be she was thrashing about with her mouth open.
if there is a history of impaction / blockage it could be something along those lines. however as ive said im guessing you could have a necropsy carried out by exotic vet to find out what happened.
