I hate em. My dog is going mental at the minute cuz some plonker thinks its good! Their own dog is barking like mad, makes you wonder if fireworks are worth it! What's worse is, it's not even bonfire night yet! I am one of these miserable people who don't like them anyway (my dad was a bit wild with them as kids).
Rant over, sorry! |

My dog hates them to. I dred letting her out for a pee when they are all going off as all she will do after peeing is run around the garden like a lunatic barking her head off and it takes me ages to get her back in at which point she has normally already woken the kids up. If it only happened on bonfire night I wouldn't mind but it goes on for about a week. bah humbug, oh no thats the next festivity that lasts to long |

I'm with you all the way. Can't stand them and have a hell of a job with my foster dogs freaking out, poor little mites. Any other explosive and you'd get locked up. The sooner they are banned the better!!

I love fireworks and so does my dog Zack. I think it's all about acclimatising them to the noise and flashes from an early age. By the time Zack's first bonfire night came around we had him so relaxed about them he even came with us to the firework display! |

My dog never used to be bothered, but his brain activity is changing now he's older (he has neurological brain trauma and epilepsy, caused by some idiot pre-owner "dropping" him at 5 week old).
Exactly my point, one night is fair enough but for the weeks before and after is just inconsiderate in my opinion. Everyone expects that one night so can prepare, but the random nights isn't fair on anyone else!
I used to like fireworks but I'm a wimp at the bangs! My dad used to tape all the loudest ones together and make a 'superwork' as he called it and terrified me when one instance went a bit wrong! |

Thanks God for people like you who get their dogs used to everything. My own are the same but the poor little (or big) darlings that come into rescue are normally so terrified of everything it breaks your heart. I really work hard to get them used to everyday sights and sounds.....the ones that happen once a year are more difficult, even with the specialist dvds! |

At one point I was going to get a pyrotech licence, so yeah, I guess you could say I like them.
I know some of the vets round here will prescribe downers for the dogs who get really stressed by out few annual firework events.
We also don't get random stuff.. There are exactly 2 nights per year (and maybe the night or 2 before) where you won't get arrested for setting one off... |

I love fireworks but I really believe they belong in the hands of professionals only. They shouldn't be for general sale, too many idiots out there! We had one thrown at the car we were in the other night by kids. If the window had been down my two year old would have ended up with it on her lap! |

Thank you I've worked in rescue centers in the past so I have seen some dogs who are terrified of things that they should have been introduced to early on. It really does break your heart to see them. I didn't want my poor dog to be terrified because of me not acclimatising him to something that I knew he would have to hear at some point. |

My boys have to put up with my ugly mug so don't think anything could scare them lol. But seriously fireworks are not toys and should only be used by responsible people. |

Maybe you parents of nervy dogs could put some lavender oil in burners about the place (away from scalies obv) it relaxes ppl, I don't see why it shouldn't work on pooches.
On another note Angus couldn't care less, but then again he's not too bright either |

One of the best things to do is to invest in a DAP plug in for your dog if they are scared of fireworks. It can help relax them and take the edge off a little. Ideally you should have it plugged in for a while before the scary event though. |

Another issue - fireworks and horses... I suppose I'm lucky mine are in an area in the middle of nowhere, with only couple of farms and other horsey places around, and they certainly wouldn't let off fireworks... + mine hear shooting quite often, so don't jump at bangs. I know lots of people, though, whose horses are sent to a blind panic by fireworks - and what do you do? If you put them in, you're risking they'll injure themselves panicking in the small space of the stable and trying to get out, if you leave them out, they'll run around like maniacs, possibly going through fencing, hurting themselves, etc. You can sedate them, but then you have to supervise them all the time - and you can't keep them sedated for 3 weeks or so. That's the worst thing - it's never just the one night. They'll start 2 weeks before and carry on another week after the event. I love fireworks, but I'm all for having them just on the day. Rant over. |

Im really struggling with my staffy zig atm , its our first firework nite with him and last nite the some kids were letting them off and he started to pant really bad like he was boiling hot , then shivered and shoock really bad . I managed to sit with him and wrap him quite tightly in a thin blanket . You can buy what are called thunder shirts / jackets for dogs that apply slight pressure to their body and it helps keep them carm . The best display i went to was at Alton Towers for their haloween fireworks fest , it was fab but havent been to a show for years . At our pub a regular always puts on a big show and i always end up working it lol! |
