Came home from work earlier today, mini stat 100 set to 27 degrees. I had left it on returned and my digi thermometer was reading 36 degrees big panic as George was underneath the mat at the time.
What ever I set the temperature to on the dial the digi thermometer always shows a different temp just can't seem to get it to stay regulated.
The digi thermometer probe is in the same position as the sensor from the stat, secured with a bobble and suction cap.
Any advice would be appreciated, due to my lack of faith I have decided to turn it off overnight |

Both probes need to be together and actually on the mat. Suction cup is no good as it is held away from the mat and is giving an inaccurate reading by measuring air temperature.
I use a couple of mini-zip ties to hold the probes together and strap them to a strap of wood jammed across the mat. Another method is to use the weight of the hide or even a rock to weigh them reasonably securely in place.
You have done the right thing by turning off the heat until you can get it sorted.
I'll post some pictures of my zip-tie methods if required. |

I have both probes banded together and stuck to mat with a little bit of blu-tac and this seems to work well. As for the mini-stat they do seem to be a bit inacurate. So forget what it says on the stat and use the thermometer to set the temps. |

I changed to pulse stat, as the ministat was driving me crazy. No matter where and how well I placed the probes, the temps swinging 3.5 to 4 C within one cycle, which was about 8 - 10 mins. In the end, I got a pulse stat and that only varies by 0.1 C. I would not go back to ministat now. You can get the pulse stats much cheeper on internet, got mine from Surrey pet supplies. |

Also can't understand why the temp fluctuates -7 / + 7 over the set temperature on the stat. Making it near impossible to get regulated. What temperature should I be aiming for considering I'm not placing substrate on the mat |

I personally go with what the digital thermometer says. I *think* my stat is set at around 26/27degrees, however the thermometer stays inbetween 28-29, so i stick with that.
If this is wrong, someone please correct me :) |

You cant go by the dial on the stats they are horrendously inaccurate use a good digital thermomter and just adjust the stat accordingly till u get the temp range u want i find the ministats frustrating as theres so much variance in the temps so ive stopped using mine and switched to habistats theres next to none fluctuation with those really but whats good for the goose isnt nessacerily good for the gander different things work for different ppl lol |

I totally agree, it is disgustingly inaccurate. Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a decent stat.

Habistats all the way.
100 watt Mat Stat for heat mats. Stable to +/- 1 degree.
Pulse Stat is more suited to ceramic heaters but can be used for mats. It is more or less constant when set up. The lower power 300 watt Pulse is more than enough for use with heat mats.
Always go by the reading on the thermometer and tweak the thermostat dial to set the correct temperature. |

I'm having the same trouble with the ministat that came with Ruby's kit, it's frighteningly inconsistent, we had it shoot up to 35 at one time, luckily while we were there and I check it constantly. I have a habistat which came with Tanith's, it's better so I was thinking about replacing Ruby's. This thread has helped me make up my mind. It's only because of this forum that I bought thermometers or I wouldn't have known and I hate to think what damage could have been done |

Yes it is not the best of stats. Seem's to be working Ok now. Although the temperature I have had to aim for is 26 degree's as it can sometimes bounce around a bit. I used blue tac to hold the probes / sensors in place. Seems to have worked wonders.
Fingers crossed. If it fails then I will definitely be buying a new stat. |
