The age old problem of mites has popped its ugly head into my small collection.
I've stripped and treated there homes and just put back into there homes white paper towels water bowl and hides! And treated the snakes! The treatment I'm using MITE OFF but is there anything else I could use?????

Hi,

Corny had mites a while ago & it sounds like you're doing right thing.

We stripped his faun down, cleaned it & his furniture then just put back kitchen roll. We bathed him in warm water & a bit of olive oil. They disappeared thank god. There's a good link on this site which we used. I think it's still on.

Good luck

Thanks not heard of using olive oil before I'm guessing it helps stop the mite's gripping onto snakey ??

No but it creates a film over the skin so the suffercate lol you can also put a few drops of washing up liquid in water it breaks down the surface tension between snake an water an drowns the mites. Cage maintainance is the main bit now, it needs to be kept to a bare minimum an both cage an snake treated. There's a product called callingtons that's getting good reviews. Also read the sticky health section.

Make sure you remove anything wooden from your vivs - mites lay eggs on wood. When we got Prism she had mites and we followed the instructions on this thread - they were gone in under 2 weeks :) http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7957 We had just resin hides/water bowl which were easily cleaned, and kitchen roll and that was it.

The only thing I want to add is be Aggressive!

The mites on your snake are only part of the 'mite' colony.

As SB mentioned you need to find their nurseries and root them out, kill the young crawlers and leave no safe refuge.

Embrace the dark side

I used diluted anti-lice shampoo in a spray bottle to treat the kitchen roll and the paper tube hides to kill the emerging young when Monster came to me infected

Lol sounds like you are embracing the dark side!!! Glad we could help :)

This site is a godsend, sooo helpful - it is a curse as well though :( ... You keep seeing everyone else's snakes.. and wanting more and more lol. On my wishlist now are several different corn morphs, a hognose, a house snake, a milk snake and the beauty snakes don't need quite as big enclosures as I though either... arrrgh lol!

Ok update time after treating for 3 weeks for strict deep cleaning and spraying every 48 hours (touch wood) there are no signs of mites! My question is how long now do I carry on the deep cleaning/treatment of my entire collection?????.

What is the length of the life cycle of the mite? that x1.5 or x2 to be sure.

I noticed I had got mites a couple of days ago so I got my callingtons today and I have just used it (going to spray again in 7 days to make sure). I will let you know how it went in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed
