I'm starting to think about putting things together for my hatchling when he turns up and have been looking at the Really Useful range of boxes. A lot of people appear to use these so I had a good look and they seem fine.

Couple of questions:

From the pictures I've seen they appear to have pre-drilled ventilation holes in the corners. Is this right?
If so, can a hatchling fit through them? And do the holes provide adequate ventilation or will more need to be drilled?

Secondly: how secure are the lids?
I've had tubs like this before (not the Really Useful brand) and after they've been opened/closed a few times they work loose and the lid can be popped off after a little bit of movement.

Thirdly: is the plastic nice and sturdy?
Again, I've had clip-locked tubs before and the plastic has been awful - very flimsy and prone to snapping, particularly after being exposed to heat.

Any response is welcomed

Mod edit...... title :-)

All the RUBs i've seen, unless previously used for reptiles, do not come with holes - you'd need to melt or drill your own
Bonus - that means you can have as little or as many in any size you like

The lids clip on really snug - i dont think a hatchling could worm its way out, but hey sometimes they seem to have magical escaping powers... Its really strong, sturdy plastic too, which is probably why they are so expensive

The area I have circled in the picture are what I took to be ventilation holes, but I assume from what you've said they aren't. It's hard to tell from the picture, hence the question.

They certainly do, however I'm getting a house snake so I'm hoping he may be less inclined to magically vanish than a corn

There are no vents in RUBs. What you have pointed out in the picture are just bumps on the box.

Viraleye is right- there aren't any ventilation holes on these boxes. Also the larger the box, the larger the gap around the edges. I'm using the smaller RUB's for the hatchlings and they can't escape from those, but they could definitely escape out of larger ones.

What do you consider to be a 'larger' box?
I'm looking at getting a 9 litre (the one pictured). The floor area is roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper and I figured that would be a suitable size for a hatchling - plenty of room for hides etc but not so large that the little guy gets stressed.
Do you know if the gap around the lid would be large enough to escape through on this size RUB?

Any chance of pics of your setup? I'd love to see what kind of room there is.
I haven't seen the size of the box IRL, just pics of them empty, so it'd be good to see one set up so I can get a better idea of the space available.

That looks perfect for a housie hatchling. Couple of hides, water bowl, perhaps a small branch and vine for extra hiding/climbing
I was thinking of getting one of the exo-terra snake caves and using just the lid as a hide while he's still small, then put the whole thing in when he upgrades to a 2ft viv. Just an idea.

Thanks a lot for the pic, much appreciated

Hmmm....
Think I'll have to try to get hold of a 9 litre RUB in a shop or something and take a good look at it before buying anything. Too many tales of escaping from RUBs for my liking :(

I wouldn't be so sure, housies are a LOT faster than corns

What you thought was vent holes are little bumps moulded into a grid pattern (no idea why!) but they make a great guide for melting a neat and tidy vent :)

That's probably where the confusion has arisen - someone on here has probably used them as a guide for melting vent holes and I've seen it in a pic they posted.
