OK so after readint through all the posts on here recently about record keeping, i now realize how important it is, despite ebing told by the reptile/exotic pets store where i bought rubi that it wasnt (hence why no records so far. I have decided to start doing them rubi is in blue at the min so thought would be good to start when she has shed as will feed then etc. Just wandering what the best way to measure length and weight is acuratly as i cant imagin rubi would stay still long enough?.
Just to confirm you shoudl record, lenght, weight, eating, pooing, and shedding and any other notable info? |

Alot of people on here use digital scales to weigh, if you put a tub on the scales, zero them, then put the snake in the tub you get an accurate weight and dont have to worry about the snake siting still on the scales! I measure each shed but its not very accurate as the shed can strech quite a bit. try this link aparently it's very good: http://serpwidgets.com/main/measure i havent been able to use it as my computer is pants and it wont work :-(

I use digital scales with mine and weigh them after they have pooped so that it is more accurate (in theory anyway). Apollo is so chilled out I can measure his length with a tape measure very very easily, but I will need to use that site for my little ones I think as they will be way too fast and uncooperative haha.
I only record weight, shedding and feeding at the moment but I will start keeping a record of length I think, just out of interest as I am sure Apollo has got a lot longer in the last few weeks and it would be nice to be able to look back on it when they're adults.

| OK thank you very much i shall try that will let her shed and feed and poop then will weigh and measure i did weigh her few weeks back more out of curiosity think was 36grams but not sure how accurate it was. At a guess she about 2 ft long. THat website looks very helpful thankyou :) |

I tend to measure the shed and then deduct 10 %, that should give you a rough size. You can also take a photo of your snake in a box, with a ruler in as well. I then take a piece of sting and put it on the photo on the snake, then compare the string to the ruler in the photo. My snakes like to crawl round the edges of the box anyway, so it helps if you can get a photo with the snake nicely stretched up.
I weigh them on digital scales, same way as lupi lou and Moppet.
I record length, weight after poo, pooping, feeding, and anything relevant ( like moving into bigger viv, or unusual behavior ). It's quite nice to be able to see how they grew. |

It would be interesting to get a few people measuring sheds and also using the box/ruler method to see if there is any pattern to the difference. 10% sounds about right, but I'd love to see some figures kept over time for various species.
It's the kind of thing I'd get involved with long-term if I actually had a snake to study lol.

| agree with you mike would be interesting to see, id never even thought about the fact the shed would dtretch but seems so obvious now been said lol :)..oo interesting app may have to give that a go easier than uploading from phon ty. |

using the 10% deduction 8's sheds have measured as follows: 19/2 shed 52cm, 27/3 shed 59cm, 15/5 shed 65cm got my digi scales then to had an accurate weight of 43g, 25/6 shed76cm weight 53g, 5/8 shed 83cm weight 65g
As for jinx: 4/6 59cm shed and 15g weight, 16/7 54cm weight 19g and his latest shed 31/8 54cm and 22g his sheds have been variable but that could be due to the fact that his sheds tend to be in two pieces! |

My fav spot for measuring is the bathroom. I just let um sprawl out on the tiles and guestimate how many tiles 'long' the critter is esp once they get into a corner between teh floor + wall. That's probably the easiest way to 'straighten out' a snake lol
I tried serp widgets and am not wholly trusting of the results.. Monster is apparently 88cm.. I think he's closer to 1m personally.. |

Lupi Lou do you know the ages for them? i know there no set lenght/weight at certain ages but after a rough guide, i was told that the snake shhould be like a loaf of bread flat otton straight ish sides with a curved top i think?
Thorn walker thats a proitty good idea although i dont think could do in my bathroom lol ive used the sofa/my leg etc to have a rough guess but she never seems to fully stretch out properly. |

I love the tile idea...
I might use it, thinking about marking the outside( two sides ) of RUB with a ruler, then when the snakes crawl around along the edges, I might see straight away how long they are. I did try the shed -10% method and then the string method, and the results were pretty close, within about 1 cm.

| rubi 8 is 1 now he hatched on the 17/07/12, dont know jinxs hatching date but he is belived to be a 2012 hatchling, he's quite small though as he was started on a maintanace diet |

| i'm going to try an idea i saw posted on another thread here to measure my snakes. Someone suggested getting a clear piece of tubing, marking centimeters on with permanent marker and then letting snakey slither through it. |

| I've only wieghed my babies once so far on digital scales, as for length, it's a rough guess, using kitchen roll when they are in a big tub having a stretch, while I clean out the rubs, as in regards to note keeping I also have activeness, I started recording this as I'm a newbie snake keeper, and the first one went very quite, before going into blue, I also note how their skin feels when handled too, because I've noticed now that I can tell about a week before they go into blue, that was my first suspicion with my 1st experience of blue/shedding |
