Not sure how far I am up on the geek-scale, but I read comic books Whole side of my wardrobe is full of 'em. I'd leave my boyfriend in a heartbeat for Robin; fictional or not, my obsession with him goes on |

Think my Geekdom is pretty well established amogst my friends and extended circles ive considered to be a bit of a movie trivia god lol and i get soo many drunken calls at wknds from friends asking me to settle movie related trivia bets (calls usually end in someone swearing and resentfully coughing up dough lol) i used to build a lot of warhammer stuff and airfix models but i just dont have the time or money anymore i do own a lot of collectibles and first edition books i run a clan on xbox live and read comics graphic novels and fantasy books i fix other peoples broken pcs and laptops oh and if i ever went on Mastermind my specialist subject would be Buffy the vampire slayer lol (or the works of jim henson lol) |

I'm a self confessed geek too! A Star Wars Geek. I have a full set of movie accurate Stormtrooper Armour which i wear for conventions, charity stuff, corporate events (get paid for them!), or just for fun. I have a life size Han Solo frozen in Carbonite cast from a movie used prop. A collection of lightsabres (one signed by Dave Prowse AKA Vader) as well as the obligatory collection of still boxed figures (which my kids want to open). Every room in my house has something Star Wars in it, my wife hates it!
Any Star Wars info you need just ask :) My Han Solo
Me with Dave Prowse

Does bonsai growing count?
They are just as addictive as snakes, and much easier to sneak yet another tree into my collection than to sneak another snakie in, unfortunately... |

A friendly prop maker cast it for me :) wasn't cheap though. My wife was a little shocked when a parcel the size of a door turned up as I didn't tell her i was buying it (I've learnt it is easier to gain forgiveness than ask permission).
I was really saddened when i met Dave. In my mind he was this big strong fella of Darth and Green Cross Code fame, the reality now is he is old with screwed up hips from power lifting and has a built up shoe and walking sticks (which he made sure were always out of any photos). He was a nice guy though and signed loads of my stuff for me. |

I grow bonsai too Many of mine are still in training though as they are ex nursery plants which I have found and am in the process of turning into proper bonsai trees. I spend a lot of my time looking for the 'perfect' tree and my dream find would be a Japanese maple which hasn't been grafted onto something else.

FAO Moppet:
the ones that you grow yourself are the best ones... most of mine are in training, that's what I like about it most, creating the tree... I keep several " finished " ( well they are never really finished ) ones for shows, but usually sell on ( or give away ) the ones that are nearly finished to other club members.
Re acer - have you tried airlayering? Sango kaku maple was the first one I tried to airlayer and it worked! It's slightly slower growing on its on roots than the parent tree, but doing well. You can also try acers from seed, pick the seeds of a basic Japanese mountain maple ( don't try any cultivars, they tend to be infertile and if anything comes out, it's weak) in November/ December, stratify in the fridge over winter and sow in spring. As long as it's the normal mountain maple, they should come up ok, and they are naturaly very variable ( bit like normal corn snakes :-) ), so there might be a real gems in amongst your seedlings. Just bear in mind the leaves look strange in the first year and only show their true colours and shapes in their second year.
Sorry for shamelessly highjacking this thread, couldn't resist... |
