I have now had my 4 week old snake for a week. I gave her all the rest she needed. I fed her yesterday (I did it in the viv. Next time she will be taken out and put into her feeding tankthing) Today I moved her into a smaller tank because the current viv is waaaaaay to big for her. She had been hiding under a heavy water dish alllllllllllllllll day. My plan was to wait for her to come out and then pick her up (This would of been her first time being 'properly' handled...) When I decided to take the water dish out anyway I dropped all the water out of it ontop of her which made her and me jump. Then I tried to pick her up and she rushed to the other side of the viv after making a sudden movement which made me jump because I thought she was going to bite me. We spooked each other quite a bit. Then I thought maybe if I put a cup in the viv she might climb in and I can move her like that but that did not work and I ended up chasing her around the viv with a cup... When we both REALLY had enough I went to get some gloves and picked up like that and obviously she did not bite me.... I'm really stuck on how to tame her because everytime I come near her I get nervous and we both freak. I think I might of traumatised her today :x |

You shouldn't handle for 48 hours after feeding.. with the move to a new tank you want to wait at least another week for the little fella to settle in... Its a hard job but try not to rush into handling... remember you've got a good 15-20 years for all of that :)
In conclusion, a week is far too soon to be worried about whether he will tame down. My most recent addition has been with me for 3 weeks now and I've handled him once in order to weigh him when I first got him (for record keeping), other than that the only contact we've had is when he checks out what I'm up to when changing the water / spot cleaning. |

Alright. I'm new to the whole taming thing as the only snakes I have handled were already tamed. I think it's kind of cute that we are sooo scared of eachother haha! Maybe in the future we will be best friends. I will treat her like I treated my lobster. When I first got him he kept pinching me and I was afraid to pick him up but it took some time and now we are best buddies :D Also, I think if I had just picked her up straight away she would not of bitten me. Will try to 'stroke' her before it's feeding time on Sunday. I quite like the glove tactic it makes me feel a bit more secure but I don't know how she's finding it. Maybe after a while when I feel more confident I will take them off :) |

Hehe, yeah I know how hard it is... I've had various reptiles for 18 years now and its still so hard to let them settle :)
You have a lobster? That's so cool! Can you post a piccie of him?
If gloves make you feel more confident than by all means continue on with them, I doubt the snake will mind whether you are wearing gloves or going bare-back... :) |

I'm going to echo Jono... Leave her alone.
From her POV she has just barely escaped being killed by a large predator (YOU!) and will be hiding to avoid another life threatening encounter.
Her environment reeks of murderous primate and even hidden in her hole there is a chance the killer will find her and dig her out(just like the last time).
You mention that you gave her 'all the rest she needed' but how do you know?
You cannot force anything and the more encounters she has like the one you describe the less she will trust you.
A tame snake is one that has nothing but good associations with your smell and presence, they have to learn you won't kill them.
Edit to add.. my Kitty was 6-8 weeks old when I got him and didn't eat for 40+ days, there is really no need to rush anything... |

@Jono 18 years? Woww.. I'm not even that old yet! My signature has a photo of my lobster (The spider thingie with a shell) It's actually a hermit crab. Don't know why it's called crab because it's a lobster!

Confidence is key when it is time to handle, you just have to be confident and scoop her up from the side. Being bitten is part of keeping snakes and I am sure that once your little hatchie does it to you for the first time you will be thinking 'what was I worried for' it certainly doesn't hurt and there will be no blood :) |

Now you can see why most of us have several snakes... if a situation calls for you to leave well enough alone you can spend some quality snaky time with a 'backup' lol
Corns are a little like cats in terms of lifespan.. likely you will have your snake as long as those two adorable cats in your signature!
...But viv's stack nicely and for the space of a wardrobe or large book case you can easily house 3-4 adult corns (or similar) in a very attractive way. Racks and rubs are even smaller space wise but IMO are not a living room centerpiece.
Tough as it is you need to essentially ignore her till feeding day. Maybe even cover the viv with a cloth to make it even more secure.
Your little one will come around.. she's a baby and needs to be treated gently. Eventually 'murderous primate' will be 'gateway to food and adventure' and she'll be happy to see you. Lots of ppl describe snakes that come to see what they are doing and will willingly climb out to have an adventure! |

Hi. I was the same as you. I've only had tango for 4 weeks. What I did was to cut the end off a clean sock and I slept in it. Then I left in his viv for a few days. Then when I got home from work( I work nights) so in the morning I would change his water and this would get him out his hide, Instead of picking up his hide, I let him come out by himself. Leave him to have a look around for 10mins, then I would put my hand in slowly above him, not not close tho. Then not move and just let him come to my hand and have a good smell. Then take my hand out leave him for about 5mins then do the same again about 4-5 times. This built up confidence in myself and tango. Then I would just put my hand flat on the floor of the viv and just wait and let tango come to me, he would just go on to my hand and I would pick him slowly. Now I just change his water in the morning he comes out his hide leave him 10mins then put my on floor and he comes to me. This help me with getting confidence with tango. Hope this helps you. |

Ha!.. count yourself lucky! Kitty likes to poop under his substrate..

Yup.. my vivs are full of little 'snake sized' holes that lead to who knows how many tunnels and such. Just be sure that the temps are good.. I had to take pop bottles and freeze them to bring the 'cool' end temps down during a recent heat wave, I just put them on the top to one side.
If she's getting ready to shed then she'll be even more inclined to find a dark hole to hide in...
Not sure what your plan is record keeping wise but I really recommend logging feeds and sheds, if nothing more it helps to predict what might be going on in there little snaky brains... |

Just a quick query - do you have a hide at each side so she has a choice of hot/cold place where she feels safe? I'm sure you do, just wanted to check ;) |

@ Thorne. That bottle idea is amazing. Just thrown one in the freezer. I checked earlier and it was 35*C in the hot end (Without anything being on) !!
