so on checking my hatchlings progress, unfortunately one was removed before yolk full absorbed (I think). I know to leave them in and just his tail was in, he started to adventure so thought nothing of it, but I think it was too early and looking in the shell I can see more goop/yolk...if they are emerging to the tail are they almost done???? hoping it was coming out on its own and I only interfered a wee bit. first hatchling, was over 12 hours from its self pipping...
hoping it ate enough to shed so I can feed it! any thoughts???

Oh dear, Id strongly advise that you dont interfere even a wee bit..
They sometimes pip for days at a time, I had one go over 48hrs this year.

And what do you mean by you hope it ate enough to shed?
The hatchies will come out when their ready themselves, and its not uncommon for them to still be attached to the yolk sac.
There will be different amounts of yolk in each egg, so some will absorb fully and be well fed when they emerge, others may not have had as much.

Honestly though, when they start to pip try and leave them alone as much as possible. Even your presence when they have their heads poking out could stress them into coming out of the egg too early causing complications.

Oh, and once the hatchlings have fully emerged there will be goopy yellowish/cream coloured stuff still in the egg.
Or at least there was in all mine this year.
I think that it is just the membrane and empty yolk sac and all the other bits from the egg lol

well fingers are crossed, as I said only the tip was still in the shell, so.. other 4 are still peeking and I am not interfering! What I ment is hopefully he stays alive until 1st feed, I was under the assumption that they do a shed then feed, or do I have this backwards? I know it is 7 days, so 7 days from out of egg or from pip? lol, ok not as prepared in the knowledge base as I thought!! grrr

They shed first.
And its usually takes a week before they shed, sometimes more and sometimes less. And it depends how much yolk they absorbed as to whether they will feed straight away any way.

Good luck with them though :) and id go by 7 days after its fully emerged from the egg

Thanks QueenVic! Planning just that, another emerged on its own, so I think the first wee one will be fine, same gunk in the egg shell like you described in both.
