I'm having problems with Voldemort's viv. He's in the top stack of a double viv stack with a monkfield viv on top of that.
I noticed at the weekend his hot end temp was reading low (24.5), so moved his hide and had a look. I secured the probes to the heat mat with some sealant, but made no difference. I turned the stat up a bit, still no difference. I used another digital thermometer to see what it read, and it was fine....so must be the thermometer.I replaced the thermometer yesterday with a new exo terra digital one. Voldemort has been desperately trying to get out at ever opportunity (change his water and he's up your arm), he's not like this normally, but has been the last week or so.
This morning he's up my arm again, and I'm shocked to see the new thermometer is reading 36.7 and the heat mat feels very hot to the touch! I've unplugged his mat/stat this morning, temps now down to 28.3 . Everything was bought new in March, so is this likely to be a faulty heat mat or thermostat? Is there any way of checking which one is faulty? Could it be my own fault for turning up the stat and forgetting to turn it down again? He's was fed on Monday, so at least I don't have to worry there. My Son suggested trying one of the other stats on Voldemort's viv, but I'm worried if it's a faulty mat it will break the stat (not sure if that's possible?). Any ideas?

Maybe plug the mat in on its own and monitor the heat, it should gradually heat and top out x

It sounds to me like u had a dodgy thermometer an where u turned the stat up to see if it made a differance u didn't turn it back down. If you can put snake in a rub or something for a few hrs , plug it all back in but put the stat on a low setting to start an monitor it. If it maintains the temp correctly then The slowly work your way back up to temp but keep an eye on it. If it goes way over the low setting then the stat could be the problem. Al being well it will be OK. Its very unlikely to be a faulty mat. They either work or dont.

Thanks both. I'll get him into a rub and give it a try later on. I was in a bit of a panic this morning and couldn't think straight...took me a minute to stop myself pulling the whole think apart I'm just relieved I noticed it in time and no harm came to Voldemort

It was set at 30. The new exo thermometer was reading 28.4 at 11pm last night when I checked on it, so I thought all was good. I had only replaced it 3 hours before, so maybe it wasn't long enough to give an accurate reading if the stat was set too high.

It looks like I have a fault with the thermostat. I switched it all on again last night, keeping a close eye on the temperature. I left it 20 minutes to make dinner and it had shot up to 39.5! I plugged the heat mat into the stat on the other viv this morning and I've been checking every 10 minutes, so far the temps are stable at 28.5.I've ordered a new stat, so will see how today goes before deciding if I need to replace the heat mat too. I'm never buying cheap digital thermometers again and will buy exo terras for all hot ends in future.

Does sound like stat, as I said a mat can't be faulty if its getting hot, that's what there ment to do. What stat is it?

It's a Habistat mat stat and only 4 months old. Hopefully it can be repaired or replaced and will do as a spare

I've bought all of my stats new from ebay, so only have the ebay receipt that I could print out. Not sure if that'll be acceptable so will have to see what they say.
