Hi , I have a 80cm long by 80cm high by 49cm deep glass vivarium with 2 adult female corn snakes , i have a mat stat and a medium heat mat under the glass at one end . I have the dig thermometer probe stuck to the glass just above the hide where the heat mat is and the mat stat probe halfway down the glass at the warm end as well , problem is the temp showing on the stat says 24c and i think my tank is too cold , reading up i think i am supposed to put the stat and the mat stat on the heat mat , when it reaches the temp for the mat stat and cuts the mat off , would the rest of the tank not get too cold , i also ordered a heat bulb and cage etc and wondering how to regulate temps . Worried because my snakes are now lying under the paper and substrate and wont come out , changed them from a small viv which i got them in bout a fortnight ago . thanks for any help

the thermoter probe needs to be on the ground as close to the mat as you can get it, the stat probe also needs to be on the bottom, ideally elastic band them together. the ambient temp will be a lot lower than the ground temp

yeh the thermometer and stat probes need to be on the ground as close to the mat as possible :)

they also need another hide at the other end :)

also its more the floor space that matters with corns, maybe this would make a better home for them http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/reptile-supplies/reptile-terrariums/vivexotic-vivariums/vivexotic-vivariums-vx-models/vivexotic-vx-36-vivarium-winchester-oak-91-5x47x52-5cm.html

Wow yeah the stat probe in that pic is waaaay too high, if the thermometer probe is the same (I cannnot make it out in the photo) then the temps on the mat are possibly going to be dangerously high. Ideally there should be a hide EACH at each end if you are cohabbing. Have a quick look through this thread for more info: http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1070

Rather than change vivs you could always make some kind of shelf/2nd level which would effectively give them more space?
