My male amel corn snake has been perfectly healthy ever since I purchased him last year. I have not had any issues with eating and he has been an amazing breeder! Not until recently have I been noticing some issues. Nothing has changed with his feeding or habitat, so I am not sure what the cause could be. He has been regurgitating his rats. They are slightly smaller than what he should be eating, so I do not think size is a factor. He hasn't kept down the last 3 rats, and hasn't actually fully eaten anything for a full month. He is extremely skinny and I occasionally walk out to check on him and find him just lying there with his mouth cracked. He is only a few years old, so I doubt age is playing a key factor in this. Any ideas?! Please please help me with this snake! |

Oh yes! Of course! He's a breeder, so he is in a tub with mulch and a water bowl. He is a male amel that weighs about 170 grams and is close to 2 feet long. Anything else |

well that could be your probs, hes too young and small to be a breeder. what his temps like? he needs hides, dont think mulch is the best thing to use as substrate |

At that age and size he should be on mice really not rats. Are you feeding him frozen/thawed? |

He was a breeder when I got him...has not produced anything for me since I purchased him. He eats rat pups with their eyes barely peeped, and they usually are live. The last two times they were not live and he still regurgitated. |

And the last time he was bred with anything was last year. He didn't start acting up until this last month, so I do not believe the breeding would effect him now |

some times they can regurge and then if you feed too soon after they will regurge again, you should leave atleast 10 days between regurges, as he has had 3 i would leave at leat 14 days. with only waterchanges. there are a few threads on her on what we believe to be the correct set up
plenty of hides a dry type bedding (not pine based) a good size water bowl hot end temos of 27-29 we normally feed mice not rats to corns as it can cause them to get over weight due to rats being different he is defo too little to be a breeder and if you are putting him wiht a female this could be causeing a lot of stress.
how long did you leave between regurge and the next feed? |

Rat pups havent got the correct amount of vitamins that a growing corn need. They are low in protein but high fat. Its like eating a half heathly meal. Ur better of with small or if he can take the medium mice. I think u have personally been sold as a breeder to bump up the value a bit more. |

Yes...the gap in between both has been 10 days. I will try feeding him next time with a small mouse and see if that helps. |

Thanks for all the help, but sadly, he did not make it. I just went to check on him again and he was dead. He was still alive 10 minutes ago, but I guess I was too late. It is truly heart breaking for me and I appreciate everything. Have a good afternoon |

Sorry to hear that, I bet you are gutted :(
Hides are essential in a corn set up though, and perhaps he regurgitated because he felt unsafe digesting out in the open? Just a thought for if you do have other snakes. |

Ya. That is a huge possibility. I think stress played a key role too because we are in the process of moving. My little baby is in a better place now |
