Polystyrene, grout, paint, varnish (I'm going to use...wait for it...yacht varnish! on mine). I'm going to throw sand over the yacht varnish while it's tacky to get rid of the shine, then dust off any excess sand so it won't bother the snake.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Beckywheeler Great set up step by step instructions.

Mine - I've used aquarium sealant and bbq skewers to stick the shelves in place and provide strength. When that's dry I'll be applying grout (I got some really cheap ready mixed that's all safe from a local shop, but lots of people prefer to mix their own so it's thinner)

So many edits! I've also made sure to cut out holes for the ventilation in the viv. I used a serrated kitchen knife to create the cuts in mine.

Theres matt varnish that becky uses that does shine... And so far theyve been cheaper than yacth varnish and it works just as well. So my plan of action is to buy another viv so i can work in that, then when that is finished ill put a snake in, and move on to the next viv..... But and its a big ,but by the time ive finish all of the vivs ill have a spare viv so ill HAVE to buy a new snake to put in there lol

I ended up using some matt floor varnish - same chemicals as the one Becky uses in those videos, goes on white, dries clear. I sprinkled a very fine layer of sand over it though and when dry gave it a good brushing down to get excess sand off. My background is completely matt now.

Here is how it turned out - not the best photo due to the glass, sorry.
