Hi everyone, got my first corn snake the other day just wanted to get a little advice on set up

Basically I have a digi thermometer on top the probe goes in through the top of the tank and takes the reading from the air, the heat matt is connected to a thermostat and the probe for that goes just over halfway down the back wall, the thermometer reads anywhere between 72 F and 79 F

I dont know how to upload photos at the moment but if someone could tell me it might be easier to see,
any advice would be great as i want to make sure hes going to be comfortable and i have it set up right

thanks
Simon

So put them so they touch the matt then set the thermostat to make the thermometer read about 80 F???

Also whats the best way should I tape it to the wall and bury it???

There is a thick layer of shavings over the heat matt from when I got it (literally wednesday all set up) should I thin it out a bit?

my corns have thin apsen my hoggie has thick as long as you use a stat it shouldnt matter, the mat is just placd under the aspen, never ever ever use tape inside the viv. it can cause major prolems, just put a hide and they will be fine. i use a hot glue gun to stick the probes down x

If your mat is inside the tank then both need to be touching the heat mat. If the mat is on the outside then some people have both touching the floor of the tank but I have in one of mine that is on the outside, the stat probe on the mat and the thermometer probe in the tank touching the floor. There is a really good post regarding set up's that is worth a read.

Don't put any tape in the tank it's dangerous for the snake! Just wrap the probes together with a small elastic band, sit them on the heat mat and put the hide on top to keep it in place :-)You may have to fiddle with the thermostat dial for a few days to get the temperature right
Thin out the substrate on the mat too, only a small sprinkling is needed on the warm side

ye the probes can touch the heat mat or just resting on the substrate (personal preferance really) and you need the heat tape i think its called as normal selotape can melt and lastly you only want around half an inch of subsrate over the heat mat :)

im pretty new to this to so if anyone has something to add im sure they will :)

the probes should be directly on the mat not on the substrate

you should not use any tape in with snakey as it can cause them harm. best to use a glue gun to stick them down or use the hide to weigh it down but you will have to keep checking it to make sure snakey does not move it from under the hide.

Wow I put the probes together ontop of the matt and under the aspen and the thermometer read an almighty 50 C !!! I unplugged the matt and am letting it cool down, will this have caused any problems at all? Im pretty sure the bloke i bought him from had it set up as before with the probes in the air and never had any problems

its not always known what damage is down. but aslong as he seems ok, not burns or odd marks or riding unicycles he should be fine. just keep an eye x
