Hi, my name is Lesley. We've just taken in a young corn snake as the owners no longer wanted it. Just wanted to thank everyone on these forums and the folks who put the care sheets together for their wonderful help so far. I'd like to ask if anyone would know an approximate age for our snake? He/she's around 2.5 ft long, and about 1 to 1.5 inch wide. (I'll post a photo if I can figure out how). Also, what size mice should we feed him/her. The last owners gave us a few very tiny pinkies. Do you think these would be big enough, and how often should we feed him/her? Also, I've heard mixed views about Aspen as a substrate. Do you think it's safe to use and should we feed him/her in or out of the viv? Thanks very much guys. Any advice is very much appreciated x |

Pnkies are far too small for a snake that long! Corno is about 18 inches and is on fuzzies, I don't know as much about the bigger snakes so would listen to Mamma ;) You could always get a small mouse first, then move up gradually just to make sure snakey is OK
Good on you for taking in an unwanted snake, sounds like he's already getting better care woth you! |

both my 18 mths snakes are about 2.5ft, ones on mediums the others just finishing smalls and then moving onto mediums. It is scary moving from pinks to fluffs to smalls, you think no way are they going to manage, but mainly offer next size up and let the snake decide they'll know if its too big and spit it out. If you feed something too small they may not see it as prey for food and refuse to feed. Good luck, i'm off to see the pics |

Thanks very much for that. Your snakes are lovely and look around the same size, so I'm going to presume he's around 18 months ish. Should I get him fluffs now then, and see how he gets on?(are those the next ones up? Sorry completely new to this!) Trying not to change too much for him at the minute, as he's just joined us and don't want to get him stressed. He has a new viv and ornaments and things waiting, but I've left him as we got him for now. He had a pinky on Sunday. When shall I feed him again and should it be on fluffs or should I continue with pinkies until he's settled? |

yes hes def too small for pinkies. I would start him on fluffs or even a small mouse once a week. Dont handle him for 48 hrs once he has fed. Continue him on a fluff or a small mouse, dont go back down to pinkies.
If he has just joined you try to let him settle in for a week without handling. Just go in to scoop poop and do water changes only. This wont stress him out too much xx |

I'd go for small mice, my babies are on fluffs. Good luck with him! |
