Hi guys and gals. Well as promised iv gone out and bought a 3ft viv :) i have to go back tomorrow to pick up the matching cabinet.
Here is my dilema and i have a feeling this may create a decent discussion...I have been offered almost 3 types of heating solutions for my new viv by the shop.
1. ceramic bulb with an extra large guard so she doesnt get too close to it
2. a normal heat bulb
3. heat mat
From what the shop owner told me, ceramic bulbs are the best aslong as the guard is double the size so its further away from the bulb. The way i see it is, a general bulb or ceramic bulb would be a lot more natural as in the wild wouldnt a corn get its heat from either the sun (when outdoors) or from insulation when burrowed in the corn heaps? so a heat mat isnt really a natural heat type/source for any animal really as the ground doesnt create heat in the wild.
question 2. :)
I'v been offered a "special" stat but not sure if to take him up on the offer. Instead of just a standard stat hes offered me a stat that can set two types of heat. One for day time and one for night time with a magic eye that senses light so it can tell when its getting dark and changes the temp of the mat/bulb to reflect a night time heat. any thoughts?
iv bought a vivexotic 3ft viv, the instructions say to use sealent on it to make it waterproof. does the humidity required for a corn mean i have to seal it? |

my answer to question two, go for the specail one, but stats tend to cost more in shops than online
you aquarium sealant on all the joins, corn do not require any addtional humidity. |

As for sealing the viv, if your snake poops near a joint, if it's not sealed, it will leak through the joins!
A mat and stat would be the cheapest and most efficient heating; it may not be natural, but it just simulates heat left by the sun on the ground. The bulb options will use more electricity while producing the same effect, and the light might cause your snake to hide more. |

| Corn snakes absorb their heat mostly through their belly, so I'd definitely say HEAT MAT! :) Although putting a light in there, or an LED strip for at night might not be a bad idea if you wanna create a better lit environment. I'd say heat mat though, a light would be optional. |

A low heat LED strip for viewing with a mat'n'stat for heat would be ideal. |

thanks for the quick replys guys :) i was just a little confused as he was hyping up the ceramic bulb like no tomorrow lol but i guess he would as its more expensive. I think i'll go heat mat and low heat LED's :D
Do i need to turn off the LED's at night? sorry if that sounds silly but obviously you would only use the lights at night as wouldnt need them in the day but shouldnt it be dark as its night time? wouldnt it send my little corn in to a confused state lol "what the hell?! shouldnt it be evening!" haha :)
And is the sealant any brand/type? aslong as its for aquariums? iv never owned an aquarium or a vivarium so i have no clue |

| any qyarium sealant should be fine, just turn the lights on when veiwing or your in the room and off when you leave. regular daylight is enough for them to know te time of day. x |

| regarding sealing the viv, i've purchased a vivexotic and was reading the warranty bit and if you don't seal it it voids the warranty! not that i've even gotten round to filling out and sending off the warranty form!! |

Drill a small hole in the viv wall and use small hooks!
Or use suction pads if you dont wanna drill holes over your viv.... |

Im useless at DIY stuff lol i just assumed the particular viv iv bought already had hooks or things it came with as standard for vines etc.. |
