ALL bulbs will produce heat when left on all the time, even the energy saving bulbs will produce a heat that could burn a snake.
A 'normal house spot light' will get high temps too, unless you're referring to LED bulbs, in which case they wont.
Even the little 12v dichroic reflector ones will give off a phenomenal amount of heat.

As it stands, a stat is crucial to all lights, aside from non-dimmables and led bulbs.
I've had a 2500 watt bulb stat'd for the giggle in the past and even the housing got hotter than the bulb.

Is that why we have normal mat stats, pulse stats and dimming stats plus others.
Put a pulse stat on a bulb and see the bulb flicker on and off and the poor snakes will think there out clubbing.

I am going to give a bit of info about stats and what they can and cant be used on. I use habistat so I'l use them for examples.

MAT-STAT, is rated upto 100 watts and is a basic on/off stat, it gets too hot it switches off, too cold, switches on. A very good, simple and cheap option for running a heat mat. (I tried one on a bulb and it blew the bulb in 20 minutes).

TEMPERATURE STAT, can power any type of heating but is either on or off so its not great for light emitting bulbs.

PULSE STAT, Pulses (switches on and off very fast) the flow of electricity to maintain a very accurate temperature. Not suitable for light emitting bulbs as it causes them to flash like a 1980's disco.

DIMMING STAT, Suitable for bulb heating systems, both ceramic and light emitting, will reduce the amount of power to the heat source maintaining a very accurate temperature. Not always suitable for small heat mats as Habistat dimmer stat has a minimum load of 40 Watts (the microclimate doesn't).

I dont like the magic eye function, it reacts to light to drop the temperature, forget to open the curtains and it wont get daytime warm, thunder storm comes along and it gets dark, it goes cold, sitting watching the super bowl with the lights on and it wont drop the temperature. Bit pointless in my opinion as heat sources that don't emit light don't need to be turned off or down over night, air temp and cool side temp will drop naturally at night anyway.
