My neighbour has a snake and she had got a wooden splinter stuck in her vent or very near it. When he has tried to get it out she bleed a little so he stopped. He has let her have a bath but that doesn't seem to have helped. She's very laid back about it all, but is very placid by nature, and doesnt appear stressed at all. I've given him the number of a reptile vet and suggested that he takes out the bedding and leaves her on newspaper for now. I've also suggested to continue with regular tepid baths to try and soften the wood. He has decided to give her a feed in the hope that she will 'pass' the wood when she toilets in a day or two. Can our experts please help with this one, please? |

would get wood removed before feeding, you dont want the wound to get infected especially with snake poo. |

not my strongest field but you can buy a wound healing aid for snakes, which keeps bacteria down to a minimum whilst aiding in healing.
without being condescending, are sure it's blue and not it's genitals appearing as they appear quite red through the vent and if the splinter is caught on that it may be pulling a little on the gentials |

Maybe a trip to the vets would be the best option? |

Would also advise against bathing, yes it will soften the wood but also aloow it to swell

I agree with Gmac, bathing is not the way forward, wood swells. I think the only safe thing is a trip to the vet- if it's bleeding when pulled you dont want to risk an infection.
How on earth did it get there?! |

I don't know how it got there. I did ask my neighbour but he has no idea. Apparently she was in with his male and he has now seperated them. Maybe it got tangled in amongst things while they were mating? I'll see him in the morning and pass on your advice. I've left a reptile vet's number with him. |

One of mine once got a piece of aspen stuck in his vent. It was a very thin piece like a thread more than a splinter. I gave him a bath in the hope that he would poo and it would come out with that. He did poo but it didn't come out however it came out of it's own accord when he was sliding over the towel I dried him with. I would suggest that since a bath hasn't helped so far then I would tell him to seek advice from a vet before doing anything else. I would be worried that if she has mated and it has got caught up in the process that by trying to get it out he could cause more damage and maybe effect her egg laying. I may be completely wrong as I don't know if it would but I would rather be safe than sorry |

I know if you hold Spot just before the start of his tail and tilt his tail up his vent opens slightly (like the first step in popping but not actually popping) if its only just in the entrance it should be removable with it in this opened state. I wouldn't pull at it too much though, if it doesn't readily come free you just don't know where the wood is stuck. Good luck to your neighbour getting this one fixed. |
