Luckily for me my christmas gift was quite a large vivarium which couldn't have came sooner as my corn was beginning to outgrow its first tank. In this tank I have a layer of kitchen roll then a layer of wood chips I bought from the pet store. I had some aspen shavings left in another bag I hadn't used yet, so I put some inside the hide. I've noticed people in for example youtube videos use mostly shavings, and i'm wondering if 've done the wrong thing by putting chips in instead of aspen...what would be best for my snake?
You've done nothing wrong as I've mixed substrates before on my snakes and they seem more intquisitive and burrowing a lot more through chips and aspen.
Some people may say chips can harm a young snakes belly scales, I used chips sometimes with a snake since they were six months old and did no harm at all.
We used just bark in Cornelius's faun when we got him mid Oct last yr then after a few weeks, he seemed to be burrowing but couldn't get far down in his bark so we got some aspen for him aswell.
Now, he has some aspen in his faun at the front where he seems to like burrowing the most & he's been making full use of it!
at the risk of some 1 disagreeing id say a mixed substrate is better looking but just chips on their own is fine, obviously if your snake had an injury on its under belly then maybe a softer substrate would be better for a while so dont worry its all gravy ;-)
Should I stick to aspen?
