Hi I have had my corn snake (Jake) for 4 weeks now, he is 4 month old, eats well and in the first two weeks seemed quite active. He hasnt been active for the past two weeks, I try to handly him every day just for a couple of minutes to try and get him used to me, he seems terrified of me, often rattling his tail, he has struck out once, I am very careful not to make sudden moves and pick him up gently, if i can catch him, he seems to be growing fast and was wondering if he was due to shed which may be causing him to hide more. Is it normal for corns to take a long time to get used to be handling ? I realise they are all different and have been told that they get more placid as they get older. Is this normal activity from Jake? He is in a heat controlled viv that I bought with him from a specialist. I look forward to hearing from all the corn experts out there. I am sooo looking forward to the day when I can handly him without him dashing off to hide and been scared of me! |

has he had a shed with you? If not were you given shed/feed records? Chances are he may be due to shed if he hasnt been as active.
Hes still a young snake, so hes gonna be jumpy etc. Its just what hatchies/young snakes are like. You just gotta perservere (sp) with the handling. What you can do is carry a sock or hanky or something around on you for 24/48 hours then pop it in his housing. This will help with himi knowing and becoming comfortable with your scent xx |

When mine was new to us i just took my shirt off each night an chucked it in the tank with him. did it for about a week an then he wasnt bothered by me at all i even found him shuggled up in my vest one morning lol now after a few months he comes to me when i go near the tank. He was about 5yrs when i got him so dont know how quickly or well this would work for you. Just give him time he will settle eventually. |

We've had our hatchie for about 4 months now and he's still a bit jumpy till we get him out the tank, after he's out he tends to relax and get exploratory. Hoping his skittishness will decrease as he ages.
He's more uppity when he's getting ready to shed |

I found Tangee's 1st shed quite worrying, she fed on the Friday came out Saturday night and that was it till the following Sunday morning (7 days), when I checked in the RUB there was a shed skin all complete.
Whilst she was hiding I did lift the coconut hides (every other day) just to check she was ok, she would lift her head and I would put the hide back down. Although you know they are going to shed it's still a little worrying. |
