Hello

I'm currently in the planning stages of getting my very first corn snake, and having very little experience of reptiles in general, I want to be as prepared as possible!

I've done a lot of reading, but one thing I can't seem to find out is how often & how many times I'm likely to have to upgrade it's housing. I'm hoping to get a hatchling, and I've got a good idea of what size housing to start off with and what size I'll end up with for an adult, but it's the inbetween stages I'm wondering about.

I've got an Exo Terra large faunarium to start out with (that's ok, right??), but how long will this last, how gradually do I increase the space and how do you know when to move them into a bigger home?

Sorry if it's a daft question, as I said, I've not got much experience at this!

Hey, welcome to the forum - you are at the right place to ask as many questions as you need to - congratulations on choosing to get a corn.

http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm - this care sheet has a "housing" section, that tells you about sizes etc. Snakes prefer smaller spaces and feel a lot safer in them - do bare in mind that you can (very cheaply) buy RUBs (really useful boxes) or similar type boxes that will allow you to move your snake up gradually (using the guide in the care sheet).

Hope this helps

Hi there Im not sure how big these exo terra things are but it may be too large for a hatchling. They will be scared of all the open area/space.

I've just adopted a 3mth hatchie, she's living in the smallest exo terra faun (i bought it before i realised the RUB route) She seems okay in it and my others were fine, just made sure she has plenty of hides. its approx 10 inches x 6 inches in size. As for substrate (the base layer of the house) kitchen roll is the best bet whilst they are small for a couple of reasons 1) you can tell when they poop and hatchie poop isn't nice and they can produce quite a bit frequently, so kitchen roll is cheap and easy to renew plus you can be sure they are pooping 2) there is no chance of them ingesting any of the substrate if feeding in their house. Good luck in choosing your first corn and most importantly learn how to post pics, we need pics lol

Ok thanks, that's very helpful!
So, it sounds like I'll need to start out with something a bit smaller then, that's not a problem But can anyone give me an idea of how often you generally upgrade the housing to a bigger size?

2/3 times is how often I have but it all depends on the snake. Rubs and tubs are great for upgrades though as they are cheap and have many uses!

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

the large faun should come with a devider. You could insert the devider to make the faun "smaller" untill he/she is big enough for the whole thing. Or simply pack it out with hides, plants boxs and toilet roll tubes cut in half. It all depends on the growth rate of the corn. Some grow pretty quick, some more radually so it depends on the individual snake really as too how often you will neeed to upgrade size.

That's great, I haven't really looked at it yet so didn't realise it came with a divider Hopefully that'll save me from buying another, smaller one!

And don't worry tordyjo, there will no doubt be plenty of pics taken when the new family member arrives

Should Deffo come with a divider. Mine did and worked fine with my hatchie. Mine is also 3months old and us doing fine in the large faun (no divider in now). It's grown 2-3pm since I got it 8weeks ago. Was told I'd need something bigger in 3-4months. But as others have said it depends on the snake. Each one grows at different rates etc.

Thanks for the replies, guys!
I'm probably worrying about all this a bit prematurely aren't I (considering I don't even have a snake yet!)? At least I've got a bit of a vague idea now though!
I am already starting to obsessively think about names now...

Better 2 think about it b4 you get your snake, than get it then think about it and its wrong/unsuitable. Your doing the best for your future snake which is great.

I got a 4 foot viv and for the first few months she lived in a RUB placed inside the viv. Then I divided it off and just moved the partition as and when she needed more space.
