We brought our new snake Pablo back home yesterday. The suppliers gave us a starter pack that didnt include a thermostat. After speaking with our suppliers after the purchase he told me a thermostat is helpful but not essential for a low wattage heat mat.
Nonetheless, I have decided to purchase one. Afterall, it will be a forever purchase and will be handy when Pablo is big enough to move into a larger vivarium with a bigger heat mat.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what makes/models to use?
oh yes, you will need a stat. even a small 7 watt mat can creep up to 35c or so especially if next to plastics. also, mats can get hotter with age as the resistance in the fillament decreases. as a breeder of geckos and now the proud owner of a baby corn snake, i would reccomend habi stat or an equally well known brand. wouldn't chance a far east cheapy!
I have a habistat and a microclimate and dont really notice much difference between them, the main thing is you get one. I was told when i got my first corn from pet shop "oh no you dont need a stat its just personal preference." glad that i stumbled upon this site as i saw some pics of some snakes with bad burns and dashed out to buy a stat straight away!
