Hi there,
I've had my corn setup running for a couple of weeks, and my corn in there for just over a week. However, I was at the local DIY store the other day and they were selling heat mat guards for £1 - they're designed as protection for surfaces when using blow torches etc.
I've stuck this under the heat mat, but the extra insulation has raised the temperature - max reading is currently 33.6 degrees. I realise this is too hot, and have turned the thermostat down. However, as the stat is just a manual dial, there's no way of setting an accurate lower temperature.
My question is - do I turn it down lots, and perhaps have a too cool environment for the day (while I'm out at work), then slowly turn it back up till I achieve the right temperature. Or turn it down slowly, but in the mean time perhaps have temperatures which are too high? I've so far just turned the stat down a bit further than when the heating light on it switched off.
We did our first feed on Tuesday evening, so he/she is still digesting, I think they like it warm at this time, so I didn't want to make it too cold today.

Hi Anastacia ive got an on/off mat stat which sounds like what youve got it took me a few days of testing the temps with a digital thermemoter and making minor adjustments to the stat untill i got the warm end fluctuations to between 28-30 ish im no expert though im sure the other guys will be able to offer better advice
may help to explain exactly how your viv is setup? |

| I set mine the same as yours when i relised mine was to warm (31.6 i think it peaked at). I just turned it down til the green light went off. |

I'll sit and watch it tonight I think, read my book and just keep monitoring the temp until it doesn't get over 30 degrees after a heat cycle. It takes a long time to cool down after each heat, and gets quite low each time - down to about 24 degrees.
Is my temp probe maybe in the wrong place?
I've got the heat mat on a wooden surface (my chest of drawers), with the heat shield underneath (no more warm socks for me). About half his plastic faun is over the top of the heat mat, with one layer of kitchen roll on the floor and a small cardboard box hide. In the centre of the faun is his water bowl (quite large and solid), then at the cool end is a toilet roll tube, and a double layer of kitchen roll (which he generally sleeps under). Around the water bowl are some leaves from a silk plant decoration, just scattered around to give some cover.
Temp probe is just outside the warm hide, in the centre of the tank from back to front, and in the centre of the heat mat area. |

| sounds a similar setup to mine glass vivarium with heatmat underneath and a rub inside the viv my probes for the stat and probe are on the glass inside the viv so i know the temperature of the glass that the rub is sat on |

| Sounds like your prob is in the same place as mine. It maybe resing on the join between the two heat pads, maybe move it towards the outers edge a little? |

| I would say you are better to have lower temperatures for a little while than too high. I would say turn the stat down 4 or 5 degrees and wait for the temperatures to drop. Then when you have got time to sit and watch, turn the stat back up a few degrees. As soon as you notice the thermometer reaches about 27-28C turn the thermostat dial down very slowly until the heat light goes out. Then it's just a case of monitoring it for a while and making minor adjustments as necessary. Remember it can take a few minutes for the thermometer to respond to any changes |
