I got my corn snake about 2 years ago and it was a suprise christmas present so i had not done much research, he is just over 2 foot and a few cm's wide just a few questions.
How often should i clean the tank?
What and how often should i feed him?
and anything else that i must know
Thankyou

From my research, as I understand it:

You should 'spot clean' the mess every time your snake goes to the toilet. Then do a full clean of the tank about once every 4-5 weeks.

You can feed him once a week, or once every two weeks, seems to be based mostly on your own preference. You should be feeding him a mouse no bigger than 1.5 times the widest point of the snake. A 'few centimetres' wide may mean he's on a small adult mouse, or a large baby mouse.

What conditions are you keeping him in, what size is the cage, what do you use for heat, and what temperatures are you keeping him in? What bedding do you use, and what decorations/hides do you have?

I'm sure other people on here can give you more information.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi and welcome to the forum an idea of his housing would be fantastic. How often have you been cleaning? How often have you been feeding? And what size feed?

Hiya and welcome.

I spot clean and change the water in my tanks every couple of days, although if I smell that one of them has messed then the search is on to find the culprit earlier. I usually do a full clean every 6 weeks depending on how messy they are.

I echo above. If you can give more information about how you are housing him, his heating, his size and weight etc then we will be more able to help advise on his feeding regime and anything else that we think needs tweeking

vivarium is 90cm by 35cm,
i have a heat mat in the vivarium with him, i did have one underneath on the older tank but it burnt the floor, and a lamp
there are 2 water bowls chunk of wood and a hollow log in there
i use wood chip to cover the bottom of the vivarium

Sounds like your doing alright if you have had him for two years without problem, though with a bit mroe info from you, you will be able to find out if much can be improved.

I think some pictures are in order... :-D

Hi Jellis,
There's a topic here http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14057 on how to post images to the forum.

Have you got any hides for your corn to go into? I can't see that in your list. You can buy special snake hides or make them from old plastic tubs, cardboard boxes etc.

Also I'm concerned by the fact you say your old heat mat burnt your vivarium - does your new heat mat have a thermostat? From what I've read it's very important to ensure that the mat has a thermostat and that you check the temperature regularly using a digital thermometer with a probe. Also lamps don't seem to be necessary, but if you have one it should have a guard around it to make sure the snake doesn't burn itself.

However, to have the corn snake without any problems for 2 years means you are doing OK so far.

yes a thermostat and a lamp guard are essential... it will prevent the corn from getting burned.

He is a beautiful amel. I would say to make sure you have a thermostat on your heatmat too to make sure your snakey doesnt get burnt. Also I think he would appreciate some places to hide. A couple of cereal boxes, kitchen roll tubes, margerine tubs etc plus some fake plants. I get my fake plants from Dunelm so if you have one near you then it's worth a look. You can get big long vines of ivy for less than £4 which look brilliant.
