Hi everyone, i have just found tiny spider -like creatures in Tobasco`s viv. He is not lethargic or going of his food or anything like that. I cant see anything visable on him (things crawling all over him)Ive put one of his hide`s in the freezer, but cant do much as he has just eaten. What do u think?

Could it simply be that it was a small spider...thinking he'd found himself a lovely warm home? |

Perhaps mummy spider thought she would give her babies a warm start in life? I guess that without photo's or further description that it is going to be difficult to accurately establish what they were... |

Have you noticed Tobasco soaking in his water bowl or any black specs in it. If you can get pics of them it might help some of the experts advise you. I have no experience of mites, thankfully, so I'm afraid I can't be much use |

Mites are a lot of things, however, I would never describe a mite as being fast!! they can travel about 60ft in 24 hours!!
Pictures are the way forwards, its all just a guess otherwise |

ok, hi everybody! I`ve been led to beleive they DEFINATLEY WEREN`T MITES.He hasnt been bathing in his water bowl, because when he does this (sheeding) he makes a right mess of it and gets aspen bedding EVERYWHERE. Nor did he have anything on his body. So, i have froze his caves, waterbowl and accesories in the freezer for 24 hrs. Cleaned his viv using weak detol water, placed in new bedding and clean accesories (OCD moment over ). I then gave toby a thorogh check over and found nothing.
So i reckon, once again it was me been over protective of my baby . Thankyou so much for all your help, much appreciated meg xx |

I'd suggest a soak & scrub in boiling water with a bit of detergent followed by a good rinse instead of trying to freeze the beasties. They will probably think it is an early winter and could just hibernate and survive. |

Does anyone else think soaking and scrubbing the snake with boiling water a little cruel |

Just as a precaution try bathing him in a water bath with olive oil in it (make sure the water is about 28 degrees c) for about 15mins and disinfect everything in his home. Sometimes the mites are on the snakes other times they are in the viv when you find them. change the bedding to paper towels so you can keep a close eye on everything and check around the water bowl as thats where they tend to congregate :) |

Dont bother, its NOT snake mites, that i can guarantee you. Bathing the snake is just gonna be stressful, and with olive oil, thats gonna be real messy, and a waste of oil. |
