My dad basically doesn't trust me to keep a snake. And says I'd be terrified of them. NOT. I have three phobias, heights, flies and needles. That's IT.
My mum said, I quote: "Over my dead body."

My dads taking me to a reptile shop at the weekend to 'prove his point'. I'm going to prove that I can handle a snake.

It actually upset me that he doesn't trust me...

is a normal parent response really, but make sure they dont take you to neon gecko at the barrowlands, is not a very welcoming shop.

Again nope they only do lizards last i checked, Pro-exotics in Paisley Road (about 5 minutes from P@H)is the best in the area and are good enough to let you handle the snakes

Have you suggested that your mum look through here to see how easy a corn is to look after, have you had any other pets hamster or something that you were responsible for?

Parents will be cautious. My mum let me have any animal i wanted apart from any reptile (or rats), alot of people have it set in their heads all snakes will kill you by their venom. Iv had to explain to at least 40 friends that corn snakes are not venemous.

As Scottishbluebird said, have u had any pets to look after completely on your own? Its alot harder doing it all yourself! Found that out the hard way years ago.

Lol, flies!

With snakes it is almost an expectation that people are scared of them, I know people who can't even look at photographs of my lot. Look on the plus side, while at the reptile shop you will get to handle a few and show your dad that you aren't scared and you might just discover its actually your Dad thats scared of them lol.

Have you shown your parents this site and the posts you've made to show you've done your research. The other thing to make your parents aware of is keeping frozen rodents in the freezer for snake food, or you'll have to make a trip every week to the reptile shop to buy it.

Have you ever held a snake or been in close proximity to one? If not, then I'd assume your dad is just showing parental concern.
I can understand how it may have upset you though. All I can say is to take gmacs advice on where to go with your dad,and then its up to you to prove him wrong. Good luck with it.

I'd also suggest that you read up as much as you can. When you go to the pet shop not only will you be able to handle the snake but show off some good knowledge aswell... That's gotta impress your parents

Just don't let you or your dad be conned into buying equipment you don't need where ever you go. Since your quite young, have you thought about uni, and who will look after your snake if you choose to go? Maybe your parents are thinking about the furture, as it seems to be the parent who ends up looking after pets when there child isn't bothered anymore.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Have you suggested that your mum look through here to see how easy a corn is to look after, have you had any other pets hamster or something that you were responsible for?

I don't think my mum cares about easiness, so I'll get my dad to look...
I've had three hamsters, a guinea pig, four cats and various fish :)
I was younger, so I have to say, I was kinda not that good at looking after pets etc.

Hehe, I'd really laugh if my dad was scared of them!
I know I'm not scared... the only threat is of them pooping and peeing on me XD

That's a problem they know about. My mum will FREAK with dead mice in her freezer, but I have a solution - I can get a mini freezer for my room? It's that, or they'll waste a lot of money on petrol xD

I hope my dad does fall in love with a Corn Snake <3
Hopefully.

Staple, if I go to Uni, I suppose that my friends or my cousin who is an animal fanatic could look after them...

Money isn't a problem - I said I'd use my own.
I told my dad that as soon as he thought I wasn't looking after the snake, he could give it to a nicer home.

Mice in the freezer was my wifes main concern prior to getting a snake. She's fine with it now. We keep them in an air tight container in a plastic bag so they cant be seen when she looks in.

i do the same as Simmy82. Mice stored in a stork tub lol. All in individual baggys too so i can just take one out when she is due a feed instead of them sticking together! Not fun pulling apart frozen mice! EEK!

Thanks for the information! :)

I'll be nervous, but not because I'm scared of the snake, but I'll be scared of harming/dropping the snake.

Again my wife had this issue. She was scared of handling one, she was scared of hurting it whilst handling one. Especially as ours is so young. Just make sure you have a grip of it, not too tight and just let the snake move as it pleases. If you are in the shop the assistant will be there with you so you have nothing to worry about.
