i have given him an alternative....when your 12yrs, can prove you can be responsible, do all your own research on it and prove you know how to look after it/feed it/handle it/ house it/ understand the species...i may consider a lizzard of some discription. (i know 12 is a tad young for such a big responsibility but he is not an average 8 yr)

A couple of scorps, perfect.
They are amazing little beasties.

If not, then get him a GAL for now as a little something to see how long he'll look after it, they are the easiest things to keep.

^ ^ lol. My parents would never get me anything like that either, i did try for a tarantula, nearly got one, very early 80's went in to pet shop, my grandad was outside, i asked him for 50p, he was about to give me it, asked what for, big smile on my face a tarantula, he never gave me the money, i was only 6/7 but bet they would have sold it.That would have been fun when i took it out my pocket

Lol,if my kids asked for a tarantula it would be a big fat NO!!
They do have their own snakes though, although they were kind of an excuse for me to get more.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I could never deal with a pet spider, I struggle to get rid of the larger garden spiders. #shudder#

I do see a good excuse to widen a snake collection however ;)

They give me the creeps too, but I'm thinking when my children want pets of their own I would much rather go down the herps and inverts line rather than fluffy things with teeth

im not a big spider fan myself but they are just as easy to keep as snakes, put in a locust or cricket every often and change water everyday.

there really not that bad!

lol @ lotabob. worth a try...

Im liking the idea of starting off small and building up his responsibility. As part of the "deal" i have given him one of the chinchilla cages to take 100% care of. see how he gets on. Although i know this will not be a great example as they are not his. So he will not be as enthusiastic (yes it is a ploy to get the kids helping to clean them out while i sit back with a coffee). He has goldfish, which, apart from cleaning them out (8yr old+water+laminate floor=disaster)he has shown good understanding and care.

@ mort,awired.....thats the idea[;P] although he loves beardies and chamelions. And i do 2. But am thinking snake or lizzard

Yes spiders are easy to look after but i have visions of my 2 terrors trying to scare me by leaving it on my bed for me to find....they do this often with a rubber toy spider and toy bugs. plant them round my bedroom trying to scare me.....lol

just had a thought ...he is so in to bugs i could just buy him some crickets, mealworms or hoppers from pets at home and say..there you go...new pet lol. My 2 whizz round looking at all the furries but spend ages watching the creepie crawlies. I have strange children!!!!!!!

EDIT; just passed that idea by him and he was well up for keeping crickets as pets haha. cheap birthday pressie...that should buy me a few more years tarantula less

Nothing wrong with rubber ones. We hate real spiders yet have some plastic furry purple ones and a glow in the dark rubber one decorating our house. It would be cheap to keep too, you only have the cost of the fake spider.

Has it got you over your fear though? I've held a chilean rose on a few occasions but I'm still a major wuss with the spiders at home. Even scared of dead ones and spider webs!
