plug the stat into the wall socket, the heatmat into the stat, and put the probe either in the viv or on the heatmat outside (depending on the particular set-up) use the *C on the stat as a guide only, set the temps according to what your thermometer actually reads
(it will all make sense when you have the stuff in front of you lol)

Dont feel bad. You often find that the shops give out dodgy advice sometimes. Sometimes its down to bad training, other times its the shop assisstants have been told to sell as much as they can etc even if sometimes things are not needed.
Your not the first, you wont be the last so don't worry. At least you have the correct info now to get her all set up safely and correctly.
The shop I bought my first corn from didn't mention a stat would be needed but I joined this forum about 6 weeks before I bought him and discovered straight away that a stat was a must have item.
is this normal?
