hey guys, just wondering how long it took you all to become awesome Snakey Experts :)
was it long process throughout, or did you manage to pick it up more or less straight away :)

I'm still not an expert...

If you mean how long to get a good grasp on things then it depends on the person, some seem to get "it" quickly, others are very quick to specialise in a particular area, like morphs or breeding.

The learning never stops though, I got my first snake 8 years ago and I'm still learning new things.

I've been keeping reptiles on and off for a fair amount of years now, but I still wouldn't class myself as an expert.
I still learn stuff regularly, and there is a lot I don't know as well. Morphs and genetics for example, I haven't the foggiest about as I've never wanted or needed to learn it, but have been picking bits up.
There is also a massive difference between being and expert and being experienced. I've had experience with a lot of things, but tend to refer to others if it's something I personally haven't dealt with.
It's easy to read the info that search and google gives you, but having the experience in those things are completely different.

I've also noticed that there are a vast amount of people that believe that post count equals experience, or quantity of snakes equals experience.
I don't want to color myself in a bad light but I find that appalling that some people do that. It's more prevelant on another forum I'm on, but I have noticed it occasionally away from that forum.
Dunno if I can mention it's name, but I believe it's refered to on here as 'the dark side'

i don't consider myself an 'expert' but i think i've got a good grasp of husbandry and health issues. working in the veterinary industry helps but i've also trained and qualified as a horse riding instructor and gone through the British Horse Society training/exam system and worked with a variety of different animals which makes you very aware of how husbandry issues can have a knock-on effect on health and behaviour.
i do think it's important to keep learning and updating/reviewing techniques and practices to keep up with the latest research and developments, otherwise you'd be stuck in the 70s keeping all your reps with UV, un-guarded 100W lightbulbs and no stats.....

I'm def no snake expert, only had my snake for 1 month but i am very good at caring for my pets and i am really good at spotting when something is wrong with my 2 cats, I grew up with a cat, and i am sure that given time i will gain more knowledge of all the care and husbandry snakes require but should i become worried i know i have this forum and a good reptile vet at the end of the phone.

I think unless you've had hundreds of snakes for most of your life your unlikely to have been there done that and got the T-shirt, there will always be something you've never done or seen before. I consider myself compitent or capable but not an expert or experienced, lol.

i think the key is to start young, i would say research a single topic untill you think you know everything about it, and use it, its fine to know everything by the book but if you have no practical knowledge, there is no point in knowing it

im sorry i do not think starting young has anything to do with it, it's all about doing your research before you start keeping snakes and learning as you go, gaining more and more knowledge over the years.

aye thats my plan to start young (not sure if 18 counts as young in such a way haha)
have my lovely years with my lovely corn :) and maybe in a few years once im more experianced look towards either another corn, or perhaps a BRB.
i'm not to fond of king snakes as i have heard they are a bit more unpredictable than corns, as if they cannot be handled correctly they are more likely to strike or nip.
however i hope to build up some experince towards all of this :)

maybe starting young will not mean that you gain more knowledge, but it will mean that you will get more years experience with the animals and grow almost a second nature with your snakes

ahh yes good point :) i learn faster this way, im already quite good with animals, i looked after my nans 3 dogs, who now constantly stalk me whenever i go round to hers, iv been horse riding for 10 years now, so horses are no problem, cats my boyfriend has 2, full grown and a kitten :) they are dorable, so i generally get on with all animals.
an old friend of mine had snake, and now realising all of the things on this forum, he has done a lot wrong and now i feel sad for that snakey :(
but i feel i should be able to grasp snake knowledge rather well :)
