Hi all was thinking today, I want to make a new online shop with a vast range of all exotic pet products in one site. do people think this could work and be successful? Also do people think any particular features on the website would be good? My plan is also to give everybody on the corn snake forum a 10% discount off everything, would this stimulate sales? Thanks for your help Sam |

Well, what would make your shop so special? There are already a good few sites with a pretty large range of products, and they are already highly regarded and have a big customer base. |

i really don't think you know enough about the industry at all.....i'd recommend actually working or volunteering in a rep shop and getting a feel for it and acquiring a lot more knowledge and then you'll be able to apply it to an online business,. |

I agree. Looking at your profile you're only 16. Now for all I know you're the next Alan Sugar and if you are, good luck, well done and all the best to you. But as 'The Guv'nor' Al Murray would say, you've still got your mother's milk wet on your lips.
To compete with someone like Surrey Pet Supplies, who are HUGE and very cheap, I just think you'd need a heck of a lot of cash, knowledge and experience in the business. Not saying it's impossible, and like I said if you're a budding Lord Sugar then who knows what you could achieve, but I do think you're going to need to get your hands dirty first and actually get some experience in the business before starting on your own empire. |

I think the path to success is pet store branching out into online sales. I'm sure at one point or another everyone has thought about this and just as quickly realised to start from scratch would be vastly expensive, sourcing all the products would be a nightmare, advertising which is an absolute essential part of internet sales would cost a fortune. Though should you have a spare fortune to throw at it and offer free delivery on all products to Northern Ireland consider me your first customer. |

Yep, if you manage the cheapest prices available in the country, free next day delivery and first class customer service, I'll be banging down your door! As will everyone else I'm sure!
On a realistic scale though, if it's really something you want to build towards then I'd suggest starting slowly at a very specialist level with a shop on ebay and see how things go.

Ah, I just realised you're the Renza Technologies guy and already have a flourishing tech business apparently. So perhaps you ARE the next Alan Sugar.
Anyway, if you do intend to pursue it good luck. The more competition, the better the deal for the punter and that's no bad thing from where I'm standing.

Thanks for all your posts, i doubt im the next alan sugar but i do have some large amounts of money from my dads business and my own to put in the business, i am planning to volunteer at a local reptile shop to gain more knowledge and see how the whole system works and to gain a good understanding of the industry, so from what i can gather, you think if i offer free next day delivery, i would be looking at a lot of customers? and obviously i couldnt do this for a product at £1, so what do you think would be a reasonable minimum spend to offer free next day delivery? thanks for your help sam |

Your starting at the wrong end and working backwards, usually I cost a lot of money for business advice but I'll give you this bit for nothing, GET THE BASICS FIRST! what you want to sell, where to source it. Ebay is a great place to start, become the heat mat king or something, concentrate on getting one or 2 products bought in wholesale cheap, and get it sold quickly. |

Surrey Pet Supplies do free delivery over £50 I think. It isn't 'next day' but it is first class and I ordered late Monday night, which was shipped on Tuesday and delivered on Wednesday. I think they are the people you want to model yourself on and target because they are large, cheap, quick and good customer service from what I can gather.
EDIT: Actually, just visited their site and no mention of free delivery. Could have sworn I saw it before! Oh well.
But like I and lotabob mentioned, I think you'd do much better in the long term to start small and grow, rather than throw money at a project. But then you're the one in business and I drive lorries, so what do I know. Just seems more logical and feasible to do it like that. :)
Right, bed time...

I have to agree with people, Ebay is a great start. If your quite arty I would suggest making your own hides, decorations and those background board things and selling them on ebay. That way you would stand out with something new rather than sell exo terra atuff like everyone else. People love to have unique and special things that are kind of one offs or are limited. |
A very special super, duper thanks for K :3 |

if you want to be able to make it, you need to compete with surrey pet supplies and if neadby beat there prices. everyone on here nows about them, and i think on every other forum they are advitised on there, so they are well nown and have the cheapest prices around, so you would either have to match them and give free delivery or beat them. on the free delivery side, i think anything over 20 quid is fair, as i now sometimes i only need a few things that are just over 20 quid, and then you have postage on top, so eds up being more again. like others have said, start on ebay maybe selling things like heat mats, and heat bulbs, the essentialls taht everyone needs, so will buy if they are cheaper than other stores. good luck and hope you do open another as there is always room for one more, as long as they are cheap but good quality, just like surrey pet supplies (which i use all the time, so would take some persuading ad excellent prices to make me order else where) |

ok guys Renza Exotics is well on its way, website nearly ready for launch, I am building up a list of suppliers, do you think mail order reptiles would work? also what one-off accessories would people like to see in an on-line shop? |

I just want to buy equipment as cheap as possible and not pay a huge delivery charge.
If you can undercut places like surrey pets then great but they are pretty good. I also get alot of bargains on ebay often alot cheaper than any online shops. |
