Morning all.
as some of you may remember when I first adopted Rhubarb and Custard back at the beginning of January I was extremely nervous of snakes as a whole and the thought of ever having the confidence to handle either of them seemed a million years away but within a very short period of time I now love my interactive time with them both and can't wait for 10 o'clock each night. Custard was by far and away the more confident of the 2 when they first arrived and was and is still more than happy to be handled, infact she's a total couch potato and is quite happy to lay either up your sleeve with her chin resting on the back of your hand or at your side, now because they don't blink I'm not sure if she's asleep or watching telly but she will happily stay there until you put her back. Rhubarb on the other hand was very nervous when he first arrived, I never saw him out and about and he hated coming out of the viv he would take up the strike pose, rattle his tail and even hissed a couple of times but he never struck out bless him, he would wrap his tail round anything in his reach and hang on for dear life rather than come out, but with patience and kindness he soon learn't that coming out was fun and before too long he too has become a happy confident snake, everytime I go into their room he senses me coming and is eagerly waiting at the viv door to be let out and rather than make a bolt for freedom he comes straight to me for a bit of fuss ( he loves having his chin rubbed and his tail massaged). He's out and about in his viv most of the day and night, occassionally he'll take a nap on top of one of his log hides or curled up on the branch but not for long, my only worry with him is that even after he's eaten he won't chill out and let his meal digest as soon as it's gone down he's up and off again.
Well that's it for now just wanted to let you know how we are all getting on.

Really glad to hear They sounds brilliant characters. I always find it amazing just how much personality snakes have, especially 'cause they have this image of being totally non-interactive. Mine is a Jack Russell corn snake, looks like a shoelace and thinks he's a king cobra |

I'm glad they've settle well for you. It's lovely spending time with our snakes isn't it, especially when we grow in confidence after being a tad nervous! Well done, enjoy them. |

Hello Ozziesmum, Glad to hear you've come to the snake side. You said Rhubarb is always very active after his feed. This got me thinking about what you feed him. I've noticed with my snakes that if I only feed them one mouse/rat instead of two, they start looking around as if to say "hey, idiot! Where's the other one?" I don't know if that applies to Rhubarb as you obviously know him and his feeding routine. Mixi has just come out of the mating season and is very hungry, that's why he was looking for more mice last Friday. Just a thought. |

Hi Strawb,
Rhubarb went on a fast for a few weeks due to the breeding season dropping 25 grams which was an eigth of his body weight, prior to that he was on medium mice but the only way to get him to start eating again was to drop a mouse size, I have tried him back on medium but he won't have anything to do with it so he has been on small mice since, he missed 1 week due to him shedding but he did feed again on Monday one day late and over the 5 feeds he has put on 5 grams. I'm going to try him with a medium mouse again next feed and see if he will take it but thank you for your info. |
