hi guys, first post on here. and got my first corn snake this week :) he seems ok, he fed well yesterday and has not regurgitated, he's been active quite a lot at night and was rather active yesterday as well. but i've noticed he only seems to want to sleep in the cool end of the tank, at night he happily slithers over to the warm end for a while but if he knows im there he simply wont move, hes been rattling at me a lot as well. the tempreture on the warm end is about 30C but does get to about 35C, like i said he fed well and hasnt regurgitated and DOES go to the warm end at night but im concerned that its too hot for him over there. also im concerned with the way he acts towards me, he seems ok when other people watch him. information on me getting him: i was the first person he saw after he was shipped to me and i was the one who got him in his viv. i know regular handling is neccesary but he dosnt seem to like me near him at all. is there anything i can do about that? and is the warm end too warm? thanks. |

Hiya,
Congratulations on the new arrival :-) 35C does seem a bit warm, my hot end runs to 31C at the most, do you have a thermostat on your heat source? They're essential to prevent over heating. Corns do tend to hang around in the cool end unless they want heat.
Young corns tend to be very shy and ideally they should be left without any handling for 7 days to allow them to get used to their environment. After the 7 days just try to be confidant when handling him, they can be quite quick when trying to get away but patience will get you through! Hope this helps a little |

Hi, how are you heating the warm end? How are you measuring the temps? Is the heat source attached to a thermostat? temps should really be no higher than 30c in the warm end and should be checked using a digital thermometer.
How old is the snake? How big is his vivarium/enclousure? How long have you had him? |

thank you :) the people i ordered from never told me a thermostat was essential, and i had read on several internet sources they wernt neccesary. although seeing the burn on the post here, i can see they most certainly are. i will be ordering one on friday when i get paid so it should be here by monday. till then i've been doing hourly tempreture checks and i removed the styrofoam i had underneath the heat mat. tempreture on the glass now reads 30C and the substrate about 27C. i'm glad you told me that, i couldnt find any internet sources suggesting which side they spend most time in. i can rest easier now :) and i'll leave him be for a while :) this has really helped, thanks :) |

Hiya, forgot to add before that they love to have a hide in each end (warm and cold) and feel more secure when they've got somewhere to hide out in, not sure whether you've got him some hides but he may feel a little less defensive! These don't have to be expensive, my Vin has a shop bought hide and two kitchen roll tubes :-) |

he's got 4 hides at the moment, 1 is an empty cuppasoup box, one is a toilet roll, one is an upturned pot and one was meant to be a climbing spot, but hes been asleep in there all day. i dont know if you can give them too many hides, i just wanted him to have a wide choice, theres still plenty of floor space for him :) i've been keeping a record of his day, only started today though because i only found out today from here. wrote down what i could from memory from yesterday, and it all seems to corrolate with other peoples records. am i right in presuming he would likely be awake around 8pm tonight? |
