I have rubs not vivs but I like to have them running for about 48h before I put a new snake in.

Quite often it takes a good few hours to tweak the thermostat to get the right temps lol

I'm naughty and don't have mine running until the snake is in or a few hours before but I know everything will work. It is generally advised 2 days before hand though.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

No it will get far too hot and could burn your snake, It's not worth the risk. You will need a thermostat for it, either a mat stat or a pulse stat can be used with heat mats.
