hi, i am just wondering how often i should handle my snake to get him used to being handled? ive been told 5-20 minutes a week adding 5 min each week but also 5 min a day??? The problem i have is catching the little bugger because hes so fast. as soon as my hand goes near him he hides, but he is fine with my hand just being there, he wont touch me but comes over for a smell. i need advice because i really dont want to scare him.
thanks debbie. |

Hi,
I've been exasctly the same, ive been handling mine as much as possible, letting her goign over my bed to really catch my scent etc!!! My Kchalice is sooo fast too!!! shes the same, doesnt mind my hand but as soon as you tery and pick her off she darts, and im always wary of catching her tail!!
I probably cant give you any advice, but i do know exactly where you are coming from!! You'll have to upload some pics :)

Different people have differing ideas about handling so I'll tell you what I do. After my snakes had done the week settling in period I used to get them out a couple of times each day for about 10 minutes. Then I gradually increased the time. I also did the sock trick to help get them used to my smell. Just get an old sock or something and tuck it inside your top for the day. Then pop it in your snakes hide so your smell is in a secure place. The idea is that your snake will learn to associate your smell with security and feel safe with you. Worth a try..... |

Mine let me know when they want to come out. If they are periscoping and nudging where the lock is on their viv they want to come out to play. Only used to do it when i went near them but have now even started doing it when my other half goes in to see them. |

The numbers stand for the number of males, number of females and the number of unknown sex. For example 2.1.0 would mean 2 males, 1 females and no unknown. |

Excellent tip with the piece of clothing. I put something in there and both times ive had him out today he hasnt tried to get away and when i put him back he was straight away rubbing all round his tank, wonder if he wanted to come back out. I no things dont happen over night but its a great step. Thanks for the tip. X |

All my snakes still have bits if old clothing in their hides and they still lay on them....worked for all mine! He's probably exploring and looking for any escape route, make sure he's secure with no little holes that he can squeeze through i.e where cables enter etc. You'd be surprised how small a gap they can get out of!! |
