hey all. dunno if you've read but the 2 corns i have are cohabiting and i adopted em about 4-5 months ago. they are happy and healthy and i am so far managing to repress any breeding behaviour. Basically, biscuit had 2 failed clutches when she was far too young and as a result is now tiny compared to wotsit (her mate) despite being the same age (ish)..(about 4 i think)
what im wondering is if there is any way i can feed her up to get back to a healthy size without just making her fat? if she stays small, she stays small (this isnt for my gain) but she eats like a trojan (double meds and STILL hunting) and i wondred if thats her trying to put the weight on?
i have no concerns about her general health and i have a spare viv in place if they do attempt to mate (to seperate them)so if shes best left to it then she can stay small!  i dont wanna have a negative effect through a misguided attempt to help |

| all corns when adults can easily get over weight and you dont even have to power feed or over feed them for it to happen. im currently going through it with my 4 year old blake. but i think his main reason is lack of excercise as he is a very lazy snake who just coils up under one of his hides and jus tpops his head out now and then to be curious or to have a drink. i been told males once put it on can have trouble getitng back to normal weight but i think i read that females expecially those who are used for breeding and put on weight for breeding as once they lay their clutch they lose quite a bit of weight. i got no experience of having females or breeding corns but im just going by what i have read. but my main point is adult corns you gotta check their weight regularly |

| keep going how you are and seperate her from the male - you can't watch over them 24/7 so there is the danger of her becoming gravid again which will put you back to square one with her health, perhaps make it even worse. If you over feed her to get weight on too quickly it will do more harm than just making her fat so its best to go steadily. |

| okies! cheers guys. i will leave the feeding as normal and see how she goes by herself. with regards to the seperation ( i know its annoying when you give someone advice and they dont take it) but im still gunna leave them together for the time being i think...it is a toughie but there has been no breeding actions for over 2 years and by making sure the temperatures/ humidity/ light cycles are consistant 12 months of the year, i think i can keep the action repressed. its just they have been in this same 4x4x2 viv since birth and i dont wanna move them as they seem very comfortable in there and she really likes using the space (the spare viv i have is nowhere near that size). i know that u are completely right really eeji, its just something im very reluctant to do :S . thank you very much for the advice tho :) |

| if you keep then 2gether and she has another fail clutch then she can become infertile as a result so i would recomend separation so as not to course stress to the female,plus you dnt want her to get egg bound eather as that to can happen with a male n female. |

You are playing a very risky game here with your snakes- you simply cannot guarantee that you can continue to suppress breeding behaviour.
You may be reluctant to split them, but paying out hundreds in vets fees if/when she becomes gravid again will be far more of a pain- you have said yourself she is tiny and needs to recover to a healthy size, so keeping them together and hoping you can control their natural desire to mate is pretty daft.
Corns don't have to be cycled, cooled, etc etc to promote breeding behaviour- they will just breed. Controlling the temperature/light/humidity will not ensure they do not mate.
Would you keep a bitch unfit for breeding locked in a kennel with a sexually mature dog? |

| well said!! we no you dnt want to but its not abt you its the health of your snakes a male corn snake is known to continually rape the female if she is in season so i would split them for HER health not wat you want,but b responsible abt this shes not up to scratch and keeping her in with him is only going to stress her and frustrate him. sorry mate... |
