okay, so im moving out of home this weekend and im getting a snake as my mum wouldnt allow in their house, i had my heart set on a ball python if im honest but i purchased a komodo ball python starter kit, and purchased the stat to go with, i was the then speaking to the person where i was goin to get the ball python from and she said they really do not do well in glass vivs and maybe a corn would be better. after coming away and asking around found out that my mates dad breads corns and will do me a full set up with a plastic faun? heat matt, stat, hides etc and snake, a anery for £100. now obv i already have a viv but i was thinking ov getting this from him, using the faun for a bit how long will it last? its fairly large.
this would be set up ready to go and he only lives close to me, what do you guys suggest? if i didnt do this and decided just to go out and get a snake alone, how do i do the heat mat under the tank and then put the probe from the stat under the hot hide? along with a digital thermometer prob and adjust accordingly? which would be the better option? sorry if that all sound a bit confusing :S

If you know someone who breeds them (correctly) and can supply you with a full set up for 100 quid I would go with that.
doing it all seperately will cost you more proberbly, i know my snake, a small faun which was crap, reptile bark, heat mat, water bowl, one hide and one small plant cost me around 120 quid, thats not including my stat, thermometers, other hides and plants.

Plus if he's your mates dad he's likely to advise you better than any pet shops :)

I dont know enough about ball pythons to be sure if what you have been told is right....probably, as if you got the set-up from a pet shop they often give bad advice . Also be aware that advice from breeders isnt always right either. I always double check everything I am told on here so I can get the views of different experienced keepers....who agree most of the time !

If it was a ball python you had set your heart on, couldnt you return the starter kit you got and get whatever is more suitable for a ball python? If you checkout our sister site, The Rainbow Boa you should be able to find better info on what is needed to start out with a boa.

Getting a full set-up and snake for £100 certainly sounds like a good deal. Look at Setting Up A Hatchling Corn Snake - My 101 to make sure that what is being offered is what is needed....and it also answers all your questions about setting it all up.

As for how long it will last, that is a question that cant be answered as all snakes grow at different rates. When you say the faun is fairly large, how large do you mean? You dont want to put a hatchling in something too big. Once it has outgrown the faun (which will be when its length = the width + depth of the faun) then you could move it into the viv but with a divider in to halve the size, as a jump straight into a full size viv would be too much.

Hope this has made sense and been of some help and guidance to you in making your decision as to what to do.
