I have me a snakey!!
Not sure what sex but i think it's an anery as it is black and white... will get a pic when it's time to handle
but... the people i got him from kept a lot of their snakes together, which i thought was insane, this hatchling was in a full size viv with 3 others, and i think i felt sorry for it... it's a non-feeder so far, altho it is the same size as its siblings. The breeders said it was a snappy one and didn't like being handled, but he/she just gave me the big eyes and i offered to try and see what it was like... apparently they had never seen him/her behave so nice. It really took to me, but now i am very worried about the whole not feeding business.
I know it is a foolish thing to feel sorry for the little sick one (ok its not any smaller and it doesn't act sick) but i figured with the amazing advice and support here and the fact that i have much more time to dedicate to it and getting it to feed eventually it has more of a chance with me than with people who have other more healthly snakes to look after and less time.... i just thought i'd give it a shot!
Despite them being advocates of keeping snakes together in pairs etc they were nice people and let me handle all the snakes pretty much, i did fall in love with an adult normal, who i think defo wanted to come home...if i had the set up or at least something suitable available to me on a sunday teatime he'd have come home with me too (they're downsizing and are selling him too) he decided that my tiny handbag was a nice hide, and when they tried to put him back in his viv he knotted his tail round the handle! if i come across a very cheap viv on ebay i might be tempted... but we'll see how this little one gets through first
We had a long trip home to London, but it didn't seem phased by it, he would either have a sleep or climb around the little box we put it in. he was quite obsessed by a big neon sign and was staring at it for ages when we got stuck in traffic. Once in its proper faun at home it had a little explore and got all cosy in one of the million and one hides! The it woke my boyfriend up in the middle of the night rustling the plastic leaves.
If it had been listless and not acting well, i would probably have left it alone as it is better left to the experts, but i think it has a chance judging by its activity. Still i am very worried, and if it pulls through then it's going to be one spoilt snake...i don't even want to name it yet. if it's never going to feed, then it's not meant to be but i'm going to try my hardest and give it all the time i have... if a 3 hour car journey didn't make it fancy some grub i dunno what else would...shame there's no interaction for 7 days... hopefully it will have a rumbly tummy by then! |

congrats on the new arrival
with the feeding just treat it like an already feeding snake and offer it something after a week - my guess is that the stress of being with other snakes was putting him off feeding but now hes on his own he should be a bit more interested 
where abouts in london do you live? |

yeah that's what i'm thinking, it's such a sweetie and it's active and doesn't seem off, i put it down to stress of being in a big viv with it's siblings
I'm in Canada Water, south east London :)
Gonna try just the normal techniques of feeding first, like you said treat him like he is feeding or he might be temperamental forever lol |

nah im sure once he destresses and gets into a feeding routine he'll be fine - my littlest one Aura has just started feeding on her own after a year of me having to help her and now shes like a gannet - eats everything!

| awww, well there's hope for this little one then, altho i can't help but worry, they just seems so tiny and want it to grow all big and strong! they just seem so delicate so i guess i will be a fretting mum type with it haha |

Aww, bless the little dear. Thank goodness he found himself a lovely mummy!
I'm sure that now he's in a much more suitable size home and no other snakes to stress him, he'll soon settle down and be fine and feed ok.
Sounds like an Anery morph to me...black 'n' white.
The difficult bit for you now is no touching for a week!!
Look forward to seeing all the photos of him when he's settled and ok. |

i know this week will be murder, i sat and watched him from my bed for an hour last night as he explored... better than the telly!!loved handling him when i picked him out, very sweet and curious :)
never thought i'd end up with an anery tho, was just thinking of getting a normal or whatever liked me most, but for some reason never had an anery in mind... keep looking at the tail so i can work out whether its a boy or girl as well... the name i had in mind doesn't suit an anery either, so will save that name for the next one...lets face it, there's probably going to be more! |

yeah he...or she lol... is exploring his faun and seems very perky in general..i think if he was ill he wouldn't have survived the car journey down... but he seemed to have a whale of a time actually! |

well last night was the night to get him/her out... it seemed a little nervous at first and was very wriggly!
only handled for a short time tho i was more fussed about getting it to feed... no luck there tho :( just seemed more interested in me or escaping! it calmed a little when i brained the pinky but acted as if he didn't know where it was...but there was a defo a change in behaviour (less wiggly, seemed alert to 'something')...so i left it with the brained pinkie overnight in a small rub with a hide and some water...had a quick peek this morning...pinkies still there :(
am i best to leave him alone once i let him back into his faun tonight.. its about 3 months old (born end of july) i don't get how he has so much bloody energy on an empty stomach! he doesn't look skinny and was the same size as his siblings when i got him... so weird... i'm trying not to worry too much... but what a surprise i am worrying my head off!! |

yeah you're totally right, i just need to relax aargh! haha might give it another go this weekend..will leave him alone til then..was hard enough for the past week settling in eek!
When i got him the breeder said they reckoned he was still living off his yolk... but seriously 3 months?! worlds biggest yolk if it is
i've seen pics on here of other ppl's hatchlings around that age... they do look bigger... but then his siblings were feeding ok apparently and they were the exact same size... he just looks so ridiculously diddy..his head's the size of my little finger nail!
do you reckon try as normal this weekend or try taking him out for a drive and the old tuna brine trick? |

I must admit that I was concerned when I read that you had got a non-feeding hatchling Krista....it is a lot to take on for someone experienced with corns let alone a 'newbie'.
It could very well be the stress that meant it didnt eat. I am not sure about how you offered the pinkie....the way you have written it, it is as though you had a handling session first and then put him in a RUB to try and feed him....is that right?
If that is so it is better not to handle it before a feed, just transfer it gently to the RUB and offer it the pinkie. If it doesnt take it then do what you did, leave the pinkie in the RUB with the snake for a bit to see if it will take it. If it doesnt then you could return it to its faun and place the pinkie inside, to see if it would eat it overnight.
I have never had a hatchling before, only adults, so have no experience on getting them to eat.
The first place to look for advice is the Guide to non-feeding snakes.

I would suggest you leave it to settle now, without handling, and try to feed it again on its next feeding day....dont attempt to do it any sooner as it will only stress it out.

thanks for the advice Kellog, gonna leave him alone for another week and not handle him... it was only a short session just to get him into a separate feeding tub, but you're probably right - bad idea...i think i thought it would be easier once he was used to me.
i think next go will just pop into an even smaller feeding tub, as i think perhaps that one i used may have been too big (its roughly a third the size of his faun).. i found a smaller lunch box thingy, which if he doesn't eat straightaway i'll pop in his faun over night with the lid open so he can get out and in to a more familiar hide (last time i left him on the container closed in the faun)... will be less stressful for him i expect. Will give it a few more goes (well once a week) before i use other methods..braining focused him, but he was distracted by me being around and didn't know where to look, so hopefully this way will be better and like you said no handling this time.
You're right about me taking on too much, i hope i can get him to eat tho and don't have to learn the hard way. I am prepared for the worst though. For now he seems ok, he was the same size as the others when i got him, so i'm thinking he isn't too small for his size. I'll do my best, if he wont feed, then it's not meant to be - but i'll give it a good go with every daft technique in the book first. |
