hello all,....we have, in the last week purchased a corn snake for our son...we went a few times to local shops , eventually picked a snake, handled it,all seemed fine, we have done as we where told by the expert in the shop and not handled it to let it settle in to its new home... yesterday we fed it which went well .. today we tried to start to handle it , well lets just say it did`nt go as well... it tried to bite my son and when i picked it up it shot out of my hand at 100 mph like a rocket!!! is there any tried and tested method to get it to calm down so we can handle it confidently... thanks in advance.. kev |

The snake probably wanted to digest - they normally hide away two to three days after feeding ;)
Some believe that if you place a sock or shirt in the viv - something that you have worn - that the snake sooner will get use to your smell...
I would try to let it alone to thursday/friday, and then wait for it to come out by dusk :) It will probably be more comfortable when it have digested and pooped. |

your should leave a minimum of 48 hours between feeding and handling as it can cause then to regurge there food, kinnd like u u eating then going straight for a run, there metabalism is much slower than ours remember :) |

You have been given great advice Kev, its just a shame that you didnt know not to handle for 48hrs after feeding....if you do it can stress the snake and risk a regurge, all it wants to do is hide away and digest its meal. At least the feed went well, which is always a relief.
Eeji is right about that being how hatchlings are, if it is a hatchling. Have a look at this thread on Handling Advice to get some tips on how to start getting your snake used to being handled....and you getting used to handling your snake !
I am so glad the expert in the shop advised you to leave your corn to settle in for a week, that doesnt often happen. Unfortunately a lot of us have found that many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . Like the fact that so many shops will sell a snake with a starter set up, but not let you know that you need a thermostat to control the heatmat and a digital thermometer to monitor the heat - 2 vital pieces of equipment. I know that I double check anything I am told on here. On this forum no question is regarded as a silly question....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too! First place to look is in the top right hand corner of the screen where there is a search button....type in what you are worried about and see if you can find an answer. I know you can get swamped with different topics including what you are searching for, so it is a bit daunting but worth a look. If you cant find the answer you are looking for then dont hesitate to ask!
