| my corn is big now hard to measure him wont stay still lol. but hes on muice normal 1 a week and hes finde well about 4 weeks ago molted and lass week he spent 3 days be for feeding day hunting around tank all the time, normal he comes out a few times in the day to have a look around and to coment on my bass playing, yes he like bass lol. but he was hunting loads and loads, now the muice is as big as i can give him sould i give him 2 mice or wate till he molts |

His "molting" or shedding hasn't really got an influence on what to feed him.
I always go to 2 prey items for a few weeks before going up a size.
Ie, Stella was on small mice, then 2 x small mice for 4 feeds. Now she is on large mice.
What are you feeding? Small mice? |

I agree with Gaz 1989. I do the same with my snakes. Doing that isn't force feeding!  |

I was told that Double feeding helps to get the stomach ready for a larger prey item.
Obviously the 2 prey items are a big meal but in total length, no girth so it makes sense I guess.
And if your trying to feed a snake up, like I am with Pernod then he is only wide enough for one small pink, so I give him 2 which he handles fine.

Yeah I got the same thing with xena i trying to feed her up and she aint big enough for a small yet so i got her on two fuzzs. Colin is a fussy eater he wont even touch a mouse while there is even a sniff of a shed so for two or three weeks out of the six he wont eat at all so I got him on two mediums as again he aint big enough to takle a large yet but not far off according to my dealer. When they both big enough i will go up a size and put them back both to one.

If your feeding two and they can handle 2 then 1 bigger should be no problem really, I think people do forget how big their mouths can stretch sometimes though. I know some snakes bellie will work better with doubles, other's don't though. It also seems that people seem to double feed for quite a long time before moving up a size meaning really that they are just over feeding the snake as it's either being given more food than 1 single meal would or that the snake or, owner thinks snake needs more food than it actually does eve though it doesn't but knows the next size up is too big so double/triple/quad feeds smaller food. I think it does depend how big the jump is as well. Like for example, if you feeding 2 small mice, these small mice are on the bigger side of the large mice but they are still large mice I think, a small medium would be better than the 2 small. If the small mice were on the small end of the small mice scale then 2 seems fine to me.
Sorry for the waffle >.< just seems a bit silly when people feed 2 doubles of the bigger smaller food rather than 1 smaller of the big one if that makes any sense. |

-Single pinks (2-3g) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 6-7 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 6-7 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (20-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+) |

You dont say what size mouse it is you are feeding Scott and whether it leaves a bump once Big Red has swallowed it. I would GUESS that as you are feeding once a week it is probably a small mouse.
As Danny has said, him moulting (or shedding) is not tied in at all to what he should be feeding on.
What you have to remember is that snakes are opportunistic feeders...in the wild they will never know when or where they are getting their next meal and they are the same in captivity, so given the chance they will overfeed and it is up to us to make sure this doesnt happen, no matter how hungry they may look! Which is why I am glad you are aware of the danger of power feeding.
The weight of Big Red can be helpful in working out what he 'should' be feeding on (AngelX has given you a guide along those lines) BUT it is a VERY ROUGH guide that you can use to give you a basic idea of what size food he should be on....but I know forum members whose snakes should supposedly be on a certain size because of their weight but arent big enough for them yet, so you should only use it in conjunction with common sense and a knowledge of your snake, it should not be followed religiously.
This is an easier version of it covering whereabouts I think Big Red probably is:
Snake (91-170g) = Small Adult/Weaned (13-18g) - feed every 7 days
Snake (170g+) = Large (19 to 25g) - feed every 7 to x days
Snake (170+) = X large (30g +) - feed every 10 to x days
Obviously this doesnt include moving up in multiple feeds, which I think is a good idea before moving your snake onto the next size prey item.
The most important thing is as I mentioned before....is there a bump when he has swallowed his mouse? If not then it is probably a good idea to move him onto 2 of whatever size mouse it is. You could move him up a size but you must make sure that the mouse is not bigger than 1.5 times the width of Big Red at his widest part....that is very important.
