So its mouse night tonight! Spunky and Hugo are just finished. However, it wasn't pretty!
I was all set to feed the snakes. Had them in their old fauns on kitchen roll. They got all excited because they know the drill at this stage! Into the fauns, latex gloves on Katie, DINNERR!
Meanwhile: downstairs on the kitchen window ledge, two nice adult mice are defrosted, and waiting to be heated! (I usually put them in a freezer bag in a bowl of warm water so they stay dry and nice and scenty!) So anyways I was multitasking, packing my art stuff for school tomorrow and such! I asked my dad to pour the water from the kettle into the plastic bowl containing my mice bag! (i'm really sorry it takes me ages to tell stories!) Little did I know however, the kettle was full of freshly boiled water! Not just warm water like I thought!
Now I know as well as the next reptile keeper that overheated mice kinda...burst! Which is what I discovered whenever I got them upstairs to my room! They both had a little rip in their bellies! I wasn't sure what to do then, Spunk and Hugo were looking at me expectantly, so I decided to see would they consider eating a less than perfect mouse!
Hugo, a gentleman as always, quietly began to eat his. Spunk however, being true to form, gave a monster strike and a big constrict! -WELL, explosion isnt the word!!
Mouse, everywhere!! My room is really small too, and the heating is on! The smell of frickin dead animal in here is unreal!
Spunk decided to wash herself after eating :p

Izzy once tore her mouse in half and tried to eat it from the belly!
I've experimented with different defrosting timings and methods and the one that works best for me so far is to just get the mouse out and leave it out for a few hours. I like to warm it up in a plastic bag submerged in warm water just before feeding. My hot tap comes out at 65 degrees (way too hot and the boiler has no option to change the temp) so I have to use a bit of cold in there otherwise I end up with something resembling the chest burster scene in Aliens! |

When I fed Phoenix last night she wouldn't take the pinky from the tweezers, so I left it in her box and covered it with a towel.
After a few minutes I checked her and she had most of it down and just the back legs and tail to go. Then my flipping dog jumped on the bed and I think it scared her cos out came the whole pinky.
She wouldn't go back near it so I have her to my husband whilst I cleaned the box and it stunk cos the stomach area was open. Yuckety yuck.
Luckily she did eat another pinky properly after I'd cleaned the box and put her a new one back in it. |
Best wishes
Catherine xx
