Sorry i dunno if this is the right area for this but it's something that really drives me mad!! Feel free to move if this isn't the right section :)
I often go on Gumtree etc to see if i can get a cheap new fishtank etc etc, but everytime i do i get so angry at this idiots on there either trying to give away their pets or get new ones for free
People on there asking for a free dog or cat for their son's birthday etc etc... sorry but a dog, cat ANYTHING isn't ever free. Yes you might obtain it for free but if you can't afford to go to the shelter and pay a donation, you cannot afford the associated costs of pet ownership.
Then there's the 'good reason for giving *insert pet here* up' ads. I would sooner starve than sell a pet. If you truly find yourself in a jam and can't keep your animal anymore fair enough, but to put a price on its head and say you need it gone is just heartless. If you get in such a bad situation and family and friends can't help you out at least take it to a shelter not sell them off like some old junk in your loft!!!
Then there's the scumbags who offer up (usually staffies - the most adorable, sweet and misjudged dogs in world thanks to chavs raising them to fight and look 'hard') some poor dog in exchange for a new iphone, ps3 xbox etc etc...even seen ads saying "What have ya got?"
Sorry for the rant but i find it so upsetting and it makes me so mad, lots of reptiles on there in the same situation as the cats, dogs rabbit etc... i wish Gumtree would sort it out. There's loads of scammers on there selling expensive breeds and just stealing money so they should get rid of the 'find a pet' section altogether or just save it for registered shelters to use. |

Don't worry I know how you feel. I've seen lots of people asking for a free snake. The sick thing is when someone actually offers them a free snake they say "sorry, I don't want that morph/that snake, I'm looking for a bit less common one" |

yes, some people just think they're entitled to stuff, if they genuinely wanted to help someone out with rehoming a snake or any animal, they wouldn't care what colour it is (as long as they got on with it etc etc) |

wouldnt you rather it went to a new home?
God that's awful, i know on the flipside that some badly kept pets do get a good home through these sites, but it's the attitude of these people who buy a pet and then don't give two shiny you-know-what's about it a week later, like the poor snakey in the pic. Getting rid of such areas of a site where you can advertise selling an animal in that way could help break that cycle...maybe. Like i said that section could be used just for rescue shelters to post animals for adoption, at least they put potential owners thru a vigorous process, unlike some chav who just wants to swap a snake or a staffy for an iphone |

You do have a point...there a strong possibilty somebody will by that snakey and "complete *B******S set-up" as a fad and then it will either die or just be back up for sale in a months time. My heart goes out to it. |

my 10p worth lol
I dont see any problem with animals being re-homed as long as theres conditions.. for example if i was in a situation where i had to sell my corns and royal because i was unable to offer them the care they need, 1st place i would ask is on here, and maybe preloved, i would NEVER however let that snake or any animal for that matter go out of my hands until i had evidentual proof the person in question knew what they where doing and how to care for the animal properly, i would also ensure the set up was ready for the animal, if someone said to me.. i have everything except the thermostat cos im skint atm but ill get it next month, in my eyes that means if your to skint to spend £20 on a thermostat then how do i know you wont be 2 skint next month to feed it and clean it?
I cant stand gumtree, they dont check their ads properly and are full of scams, id never advertise any animal on there.
Dont get me started on staffies! its a sore subject! i see them constantly advertised in the local paper for a tenner! the so called "trend" of having them as pets pees me off! they are lovely dogs and in the right owners hands wouldnt hurt a fly! i know many people that have them including my fella but his staff lives in worcester and all their staffies are well trained and not the aggressive animals they are made out to be... I was talkig to my mum about it the other day because we kept seeing the ad's, my conclusion is (which may be wrong just my oppion) people are buying staffies so cheap they are not thinking about the bringing up costs of a dog, many times i see kids with puppies showing them off to their mates round town. Now like the laws of any mammal, if they where stupid to buy two of them a male and female didnt get them done at the vets this then leads to babies, then the next year more babies... hence the load i keep seeing going stupidly cheap in the paper, which then leads to more people without the right understanting buying more staffies on the cheap.. like a vicious circle :( I have been in the path of a staffie not bought up lovingly.. bought up as a "show off" dog so to speak and guard their house... it nearly killed my fellas dog and nearly took my hand with it.. it wasnt a nice xmas present... Like i said tho thats just my oppion of the situation so please dont flame me for it :)
That poor snake on preloved :( I actually hope someone does pay the £50 just to get that poor snake outta there! |

I completely agree with you about staffies, they are amongst my fave dogs even tho i have never had one (yet), such utter sweet-hearts...last night i saw one with it's repsonsible 'proper' dog owner, (not chav scum!), and what was he carrying in his mouth? A big leaf, bless he was carrying it as delicately as if he were carrying an egg!
The woman who used to live upstairs from my mum, she started out as chavvy scum, but then randomly rescued a staffy who was tied up in a shed and being over-bred from, she would sit in the front garden all day and watch the world go by, such a sweetie. But then the woman got back into being a scum bag, we heard her shout and beat the little dog (RSPCA said we had no proof), then we overheard her talking about breeding from her, we were so tempted to steal her when she moved out! I really feel sorry for these types of dogs, they are so sweet natured, but the build of the breed (very thick set, powerful looking) means they are popular in the circles of idiots who want to fight dogs and look hard, i hate it. |

some people just don't deserve the pleasure of keeping animals simple as. It goes back to the much discussed topic of pet shops not giving proper care advice just to get a quick sale and thats not excusing the numptys that keep these poor animals in bad conditions, but if more sellers of animals were more concerned about the welfare of the animals rather than the money, maybe some of these animals would get the care they deserved? |

Re-homing centres rules on staffies are quite harsh. If it pulls at the lead too much, showing a bit of aggression at other dogs, then it gets out down, even if it is quite young and trainable. I suppose with sites like gum tree these "un-trained" dogs at least get a shot of getting a home rather than be put down.
Also you have to remember, RSPCA and other charities are refusing to take some animals now, most of which will be brought in will be staffies. They are talking to people about bringing out some sort of law but it will be ages if it actually happens.
The snake advert it looks like they ave another rep below that one too. |

Theres been talk of animal licences for ages but i cant see that doing anything if it comes in, plenty of idiots drive without a licence and it will be same situ with animal ones, i think there should be more laws tho, regarding the selling, buying and keeping of animals. |

yeah defo, you should have to have a license at least to breed animals i think, i know it's harsh on the responsible, brilliant breeders out there but at least it will protect the animals from the idiots who just get one 'well'ard' dog and breed it with their mate's dog to make a few quid.
and harsh at it sounds, if you're getting a dog/cat etc as a pet it should be the law to neuter it, or at least male animals (seeing as spaying a female involves a proper op, not just a snip lol) |

Licenses wont work, for few reasons, firstly who would pay for the licenses as the breeders wont so it will be the buyers so up go the prices. secondly the breeding would just go underground so traceability / history / parentage etc of the animals bought will be near on impossible.

Also, what would happen with accidental breeding?
I think the RSPCA ere trying to talk to the gov about breeding and selling licences but unless a perfect solution is met, no-one will be happy. Also any licences would be a faff figuring how much to charge on species of animals for the licence.
Also, where is the actual advert for that snake? Unless it says what equipment comes with it you can't really judge if it's been poorly kept or not. |

yeah it would too hard to regulate i guess, but a responsible owner would prevent accidental breeding in the first place. |
