So today, I had my welcome day at college *sigh*
I was paired up with a guy who I thought 'oh lord...we're not gonna get on' anyway turns out we both have corn snakes yay :D and he was not so bad after all, dam me and my stereotypes!!

secondly, I went to buy Doyle some new goodies, I only came back with some leaves though because the dam shop didnt have a card thingy D; He is loving them anyway...see for yourself :P

Anywho, My question/concern
Can a heat mat loose...heat?
Usuaully the bottom of his shelf is warm from the mat, but today I felt it and it was barely warm, his tank in the warm end was down to 75 , usually its 82/83 I'm thinking it could possibly be the weather, or the fact that I havnt been sitting in my room all day heating it up.
I need to get a new mat anyway now that I've moved him upto a bigger tank but for the next few days ive covered half the top of the tank with a towel to stop so much heat escaping do you think thats okay? He seems warm enough he's always on his cold side anyway...

Sorry for such a long post!

Love the photo. Great that you met up with fellow snake lover - must have been a bit of light relief on first college day.

I've never used one of those kind of tanks - but weather is cooler, and if you haven't been in your room as much then it's probably the cause.

Hopefully someone will be along soon who knows about using a heatmat in that sort of tank. All the best!

What type of stat do you use?

If its an on/off it could of just been that the mat had been turned off and his shelf had cooled down.

Maybe try to pin them down with something. I use a fairly heavy fake cactus on top of the wires just before the probes. Some people glue them with silicon glue.

The exo terra style of vivs arent very good at holding heat in, seeing as hot air rises, having all that mesh at the top, lets it all out very quickly.

Hmm thats interesting, I was going to just get a sheet of wood to cover it but thats much cheaper! I may see if I have an old sheet to put on the top.

I take it you're doing that to retain a bit of heat?
