I have a question for you all. My corn is my first snake, love her to bits and have learnt so much since i got her in Nov 09, so much so that i am now addicted to snakes....i'm looking at getting a male hatchling next month to double my collection

But i now also fancy somethng a bit bigger, with a view to getting something next year. Now i love Royals, more chunky, about the right length etc...but reading on RFUK it seems a lot of people think they are boring in the fact that they dont do much. Now i'm not expecting it to do the washing up or anything like that but i do want a snake that i can interact with and handle fairly regularly.

So my question is, apart from a royal what would be another good choice of snake for me to get, chunkier/bigger than a corn, growing up to a max of about 7-8ft, i reckon would be still handle-able...still needs to have a good temperament, dont want it trying to eat me...?

Cheers

Stu.

Is it Gingerpony who has dumerils? They are beautiful, and don't grow too big - she'd certainly be able to tell you more.

I have a royal
He is very cute - as much as i love him, they are like big lazy slugs lol
Awww lookit

Boas (i cant remember which... bcc or bci) grow to about 7 - 8ft and from what i've heard are pretty docile.
A few people on here have them
Or rainbow boas? i dont know much about them but they sure are pretty! Hiper2009 has a couple

crikey, so many replies so fast, thanks all.

I do find that RFUK doesnt seem as friendly as here, but its good to widen my knowledge.

I've heard that royals can be a pain to feed too, thats another factor putting me off them....but they are soooo beautiful....

I always thought boa's grew huge, obviously i was mistaken. I'll look into that.....also whats the difference between bci and bcc?

What snake is a dumeril???? or is it its own type?

Are the hogg island boa's the ones with the funny ugly noses???

Aww thank you, Megg!

Yes, I'd recommend TRP - it's a lot slower than corn thread ... umm, wonder why???

No, seriously, royals have their own charm. Yes, the eating thing has to be reckoned with. They are erratic. They scoff their grub and then fast for ... well, it can be months, just as they would do in the wild. Sounds terrifying at first, but get reading on TRP and it doesn't sound half as frightening.

All the best whatever you choose!

any of the dwarf boas would be fine for the size you are after, royals can stress easily and can go off food for long periods of time, which doesnt seem to affect them, but if you are a worrier about your snake not eating a royal may not be for you.

Any reason why it would have to be a big bodied snake, King snakes are fabulous they are more active than corns and can handle well generally with a good feeding response .

I just fancy something a little more substantial, always loved snakes, and the corn snake is amazing, such a personality and i'll always have corns (would like to have a go at breeding in a few years time just for pleasure)but sometimes size matters....ha ha, no seriously i just liked holding a royal at my local rep shop due to the extra weight and size.....felt good to hold if that makes any sense.

The ones with the funny noses are hognoses, I think. They have a forum on here too.

I know bci is boa constrictor imperator, don't know what a bcc is but you can soon google it, same with a dumeril, which is a really beautiful boa that doesn't grow too big. Don't know what prices these beasties go for.

Oh, it's fun deciding though! Good luck!

Will definitly look at the boa forum....too many choices but a very nice choice....yeah, some of the morphs go for silly money.

Get a king.
Roughly the same size as a corn, but a much better personality.

Oh, sorry, Lennon - it's getting a bit hectic tonight!

He does look nice - my Shahi's a normal and I was told that he was 'high gold' but I'm sure he's not as golden as that. (Love him to bits whatever!)
