Hi peeps,
I'm in the process of buying a new light guard set up and i currently have a clear bulb and it gets over 40 deg C after just 10 mins. I am trying to find a bulb set up that gives off very little heat and also lets the snake feel like its still night time. i just want some good viewing time!!

IR bulbs are a form of heat bulb so unless you plan on using it to heat the vivarium and keep it on all the time thats not what you want to use.
If you want to use it for viewing purposes only you could try a regular energy saving light bulb, or some LED lights. |

| stick on LED lights will be fine for that they are not overly bright, most other light sources including infra red require to be statted. As you have said you want minimal heat i have assumed you use a heat mat. |

i hear what you say, but i read about the red bulbs and it does say that they are best as they dont effect the day/night cycle. Would they get as hot as a spot bulb as thats what im using.

| a friend of mine who is also a member made us both sum lighting using 6 red LED's connected to a head phone jack that runs off a 9volt battery in a box with a on/off switch and dimmer, pretty funky! I,ll get him to post sum pics and "a how to" if you like? |

Ive actually just made myself some LED lighting. all ive used is an 18v battery which i can obtain from my workplace, but 2 9v batteries are exactly the same. i have 6 LEDs in series along with a resistor and adjustable resistor (so i can dim the lights if they are going to be on for a prelonged period of time, to prevent them from getting to hot.) along with a simple on off switch. it looks prity cool and was quite easy to make, and thanks to the majority of them being ordered from work, cost me a grand total of 3 quid. ill get some pictures up of them but it is very simple.

| yeah no problem. ill sort that out. ill be round from about 5ish and my drill are still around. shouldn't take 2 mins. it takes longer trying to work out which holes are opened up to put the leds in than to drill em. |

I have some stick on lights I got from Asda and they work fine but maybe you would need 2 to light it up properly. The stick on ones I have you push on for light and push them again for no light so when you are done watching snakey, you can turn the lights off.
What bulb were you using? Normal ones shouldn't give off that much heat? |

its a spot light. it end up heating the cool end up to over 30 deg c after just 10 mins. Its on the hot side! |

From things ive read on the forum already, you get the best results for heating from a heat mat and not a heat lamp.
Ill get a detailed description of how i made my LED lighting system with pictures up very quickly. |

I've got white LEDs in the top of Tangos viv, they are 2 lots of 15 LEDs and each lot is 12 images long, plus the transformer that comes with them is adjustable to you can have the lights dimmed.
The Ebay seller I bought them from, do all different colours, there are red, green, white and blue. If you want the details, let me know and I'll put the sellers name on here. |
