Use alcohol gel or similar everytime you handle your snakes etc??

If you don't, why not?

Also, do you know what nasties are common on snakes scales and in their mouths??

Just out of curiosity.

I use it every time i handle any of the snakes. If i am handling them all one after the other then i do tend to use the gel then wash my hands with soap and water to get rid of the strong smell then rub my hands together and sometimes on my tum to get my smell on them before handlin the next snake.

they may not like it but its the easiest way of ensuring you don't cross contaminate, not a problem if you only have 1 though.

any answers to the second question?

I know about salmonella. would worry about cross contamination of mites or other parasites when handling or cleaning out. Not sure about anything else tho

Put it this way, both salmonella and pseudamonas can kill, salmonella is unlikely to do so unless you are already unwell, but pseudomanas is nasty, it affects your lungs, and can cause a fluid build up, which in turn can lead to drowning!! how about that then!!!

Am disappointed GP!!!!!

Do I don't, I would like to use the gel stuff but it gives me a rash. I do use anti-bacterial soap that comes out of a pump. Probably not as good as the gel stuff. I do also normally wash my hands after touching each snake. I also watch my hands after touching their water bowls or hides. Funnily enough though, I don't use the proper disinfectant stuff to clean their viv, just boiling water and fairy liquid.

Yes I do, know about the nasties, but I like looking into one of my snakes vivs and him comming up and touching his nose with mine. He's probably sizing up my nose to eat lol.

Salmonella is just as risky in other pets, not just snakes. Snuggling up to your cat and kissing it is how I will more likely to catch it. Interestingly enough, a week ago my b/f thought he had a very mild cause of salmonella (could have been a slight stomach bug but he was insisting it was salmonella) although he could have got it from anything, his hygerine is pretty darn poor. He could have got it from the chickens, snakes, cat, dog but more likely, the a bit under cooked and handling raw chicken.

I wonder what causes snakes to have salmonella, I've heard it's the mouse they eat, that they naturally produce it or its some flys.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

I use hand sanitizer gel before and after handling the snakes, but because it's so strong I try to use the minimum amount for my hands. I let it dry and rub it in to my arms so that the smell isn't so strong. I recently got some peach scented stuff which smells a lot nicer than the Carex stuff, as that is strong lol. I'm pretty sure the snakes will appreciate my thoughtfulness 8-D
