My hatchling which hatched on 21st August and shed 7 days later still hasn't eaten. When I had a look at it two nights ago I noticed a dark bulge above its vent. The other snow has a siilar dark patch but their is no bulge - does my snake have an excrement blockage and how do I deal with it if it doesn't shift?

Not eating 2 weeks after hatching is common.
From my experience (which is not a massive amount), it's actually quite common.
If they still haven't eaten from 4-6 weeks, then maybe get the little fella/felless checked.

Other more experienced hatchers may be able to confirm this, or tell me i'm talking through my backside, so i'd await info from others.
Especially Blackecho and Moneymaker, they seem to know what they're talking about.

Haven't looked at other threads much yet, but is he hatched by you? or bought by you?

Hi Tipsy,
When you say 'My Hatchling', is it one of a clutch of hatchlings that you have bred or is it one single hatchling that you have bought?

I would not start to worry about a hatchling not eating until a month has passed, but if you have more than one to feed, offer the food to the non-feeder first and any refusals can be fed to guaranteed feeders, to save a defrost being wasted.

You can see the spot through its thin skin.
Try raising the heat in the viv/tub to help the snake digest the food quicker and pass it through. God belly heat on a stat. No need to worry until you have exhausted all options, but the time when you think......"should i take it to the vet?" is the time to take it to the vet. There is not a NO answer to that question.
Try a warm bath for it daily, but just enough to cover the snake by its depth twice. (1cm high = 2cm of water for hatchlings) As the water depth and duration increase, put something in the water so that it can rest its head, but make sure it can stretch out.
Miss a feed too, until you see a change and it passes out what is in its belly.
Lets know how you get on.

I think the temp is warm enough. All it has eaten is the contents from its egg but it did poop within the first week. I'll try feeding him again tomorrow - thanks for the advice.

Tipsy, in your signature, you have 3 babies and 11 starry eggs.

When you say 'starry' do you mean that your eggs have small star shapes on them?
If so, thats a lack of calcium in the shell, which could mean that the mum was calcium difficient before breeding and while gravid.
If you try feeding pinks, you will need to dust them with supplements or use drops in the water.
Light, diet and temp all go towards good calcium production.

Hard to tell unless the snake is seen, but its just advice.

I think it was the second clutch. There was a thread about it a while ago, I'll try and find it.

That's great advice for when the next clutch hatch (hopefully). When you nsay light/temp do you mean the eggs or snakes for calcium production? I have been feeding the mother up more but she is still quite thin compared to the other adults - does she need calcium?

A mineral supplement sprinkled on the food will aid recovery and strength growth from most things, especially from laying eggs.
I dust all my food before feeding as a matter of course anyway.
Its like giving kids multi-vitamins.
I meant for the snakes, to produce calcium.
Like the sun on you gives you Vitamin D, no sun Vit D deficient. etc

I'm offering it food every 4 days but still refusing. After the advice I'm not too worried now but he is awfully thin and small and the lump is still there. At some point I'll attempt to massage it but I won't force feed it, and will let nature take its course, whatever that may be. I had such high hopes for it as the blighter bit me on the first day - a good healthy sign I thought! The other two are greedy pigs, and one is crazy - cleaning his tiny box keeps my reflexes exercised!!!
