hi forum, I'm setting up my large Viv ready for when my little corn is big enough to go in and I've just got 2 digital thermometers for it, 1 for either end, I've got the ones with a long probe that you put at the back of the viv with the wire leading round the sides and the screen in view at the front, few questions though, where should I put the probe? high or low at the back and how far along? and also what's the best way to pin the wire to the side? should I use household speaker wire pins? the ones with a c shape plastic cup and a nail or should I use a staple? I'm not sure what to use coz I don't want to poison my snake with any toxic metal, or should I just leave it 'loose' tucked against the side and conceal it behind the logs and under the substrate? thanks for any help

You need the one on the warm side, where your stat probe is, which ideally should be in contact with your heat mat. The possition of the second therm dosn't really matter too much, just put it on the cool side somewhere.
The speaker wire pins would be fine, although im not sure i would use staples just incase your snake climbed on the wire and pulled one side of a staple out, i imagine it could do some damage. |

thanks dannybrown, ok I'll use the speaker wire clips for the wire, my heat mat ain't got a thermostat, I got told to use one of the habistat heat mats that you just plug in and it stays one temperature constantly so I guess I'll just put the probe a bit above the substrate, thanks for your answers mate. |

mats dont come with built-in thermostats you have to buy one seperate,if you just plug a mat into the wall it will stay a constant tempature but it will be very very high and your snake will get burns and possibly die,a thermostat is the most important piece of kit you need so get one quick. |

As lee said you need a thermostat ASAP!! and i have my thermostat sensor and my thermometer rubberbanded together layed on top of the heat mat, they are both laid flat and kept down by the hide. Karma just sit on it lol. but its directly on top of the mat |

thanks for your comment cornsnakenoob, I've just phoned all my local reptile and snake specialists and they said its ok and that I don't need a thermostat with my set up, my heat mat doesn't need one coz its a self regulating one or something like that, the shop I bought him from actually set up my whole viv (apart from the new digital thermometers, they used traditional dial ones) and they would have fitted a thermostat if I needed one, thanks loads for you reply though, I've only been on here a day or two but everyone is so helpful, cheers |

by the way my warm end of my small plastic viv with the same heat mat is about 25c and always is, can't quite read it accurately and that's why I want the big clear digital thermometer on his large permanent viv! |

If these "snake specialists" were really that, then they'd have told you to get a stat. You really do need to get one, not to is not only seriously stupid but ignorant aswell.
If you read through the forum then you will probably gather what most people think of most pet shops and their so called "reptile experts"... |

Im sorry but if you take that advice then please dont ask whats happened to your snake when you find it like this
totaly irresponsable of any shop to not recommend a stat.
this was posted by Kehhlyr to show what temps a mat can reach, bear in mind its in celcius not farenhiet.

I would like to draw your attention to the following pics, they were taken about 5 mins ago, on a mat that I left without a stat to see how hot it would get. Even I was suprised at how hot it got, yet with the stat it sits happily around the 29c mark.
There is a variation of about 10-12 degrees C across the mat. This mat was left on the carpet with a feeding rub on top, to emulate a mat without a stat without risking damaging a snake.
However not all mats might hit this temperature, but is it a risk worth taking? A £20-30 stat, or potentially hundreds of pounds on vet treatment, I know what I'd go for.
I'm not trying to scare-monger you, but a stat is essential, and it should be something that is purchased at the same time as the heatmat.

even if you just use your hand if the mat feels remotely warm to you, a human at 37*C, then its too hot for your snake................ |

I'll go and buy one if I need one, I really did.nt know and I'm certainly not ignorant I'm just following the advice I got, by the way the mat is under the plastic viv not inside it and I know he won't get burnt coz it ain't hot enough but I'll look at them tomorrow and get one if I need to, they do know what they are talking about coz they are all snake owners not just selling them, I'll investigate |
